New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Electoral District Of Lachlan
Lachlan was an New South Wales Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. During the first two Parliaments (1856–1859), there was an electorate in the same area called Electoral district of Lachlan and Lower Darling, Lachlan and Lower Darling, named after the Lachlan River, Lachlan and Darling Rivers. Lachlan was created in 1859 and abolished in 1880, partly replaced by Electoral district of Forbes, Forbes. In 1894 Forbes was abolished and Lachlan was recreated. In 1920 Lachlan and Electoral district of Ashburnham, Ashburnham were absorbed into Electoral district of Murrumbidgee, Murrumbidgee and elected three members under proportional representation. At the end of proportional representation in 1927, Lachlan was recreated. It was abolished in 1950, recreated in 1981 and abolished in 2007. Griffith Evans (politician)
Griffith Parry Evans (22 March 1869 – 16 August 1943) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1941 until his death. He was a member of the Country Party. Early life Evans was born in Wagga Wagga, the son of William Evans, a builder and was educated at Sydney Boys High School, and the Law Faculty of the University of Sydney. In his youth, he was a noted amateur cyclist. He was an articled clerk in 1888 and was admitted as a solicitor in 1893. Evans established a practice in West Wyalong and became active in local community organizations including the Farmers and Settlers Association, the hospital board and the Progress Association, he became a Councillor of the Country Party in 1938–40. Evans also owned an extensive sheep station near West Wyalong after 1909. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during debate, and may punish members who break the rules of the House. John Courtenay Chanter
John Courtenay Chanter (17 February 1881 – 23 February 1962) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1943 and 1947. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Early life Chanter was born in Panoomilloo near Rochester, Victoria and was the son of John Chanter and Mary Anne Clark. His father was a farmer and politician who represented the seats of Murray and Deniliquin in the Legislative Assembly between 1885 and 1901 as a Protectionist. He held ministerial office as the Secretary of Mines in the government of George Dibbs. John Chanter, sr. was also the member for Riverina in the Australian House of Representatives at various times between 1901 and 1922. He was a member of the Protectionist Party until 1909, the Australian Labor Party and, after the Labor Party split of 1916, the Nationalist Party.
