1940–41 National Hurling League
The 1940–41 National Hurling League was the 14th edition of the National Hurling League, which ran from 6 October 1940 to 30 March 1941. The ten participating teams were Clare, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Westmeath who were divided into two divisions of five teams. The participants agreed to play a four game format whereby each team would play each of their four rivals once with two points awarded for a win and one point awarded for a drawn game. The two teams with the most points in each division at the completion of the season would play a final, with the winners being declared National Hurling League champions. Cork defeated Dublin by 4-11 to 2-7 in the final. Cork also won the All-Ireland Championship in 1941, the fifth time that a team completed the league-championship double. Connie Buckley
Connie "Sonny" Buckley (24 November 1915 – 27 January 2009) was an Irish hurling, hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Cork GAA, Cork senior team. Buckley made his first appearance for the team during the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1934, 1934 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1941, 1941 championship. During that time he won one All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medal, one Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster medal and two National Hurling League, National League medals. An All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion, Buckley captained the team to the All-Ireland title in 1941. The Limerick County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Luimneach) or Limerick GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Limerick. Cork Athletic Grounds
The Cork Athletic Grounds was a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium where major hurling and football matches were played. Situated in the Ballintemple area of Cork in Ireland, it was the home of Cork GAA between 1904 and 1974. The stadium was demolished in 1974 and replaced by Páirc Uí Chaoimh. History In late 1902 an attempt was made by the Cork County Board of the GAA to provide Cork city with a dedicated athletic stadium. A new company, the Cork Athletic Grounds Committee Ltd., was established under the chairmanship of James Crosbie. The county board invested £30 in the venture and a member of the board was appointed as a director. The Double (Gaelic Games)
The Double is a term in Gaelic games that refers to a county winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in the same year. Other major trophies won in combination in the same year at minor or under-21 levels are also often referred to as doubles. Similarly, the winning of the All-Ireland and the National League titles in the same year may also be referred to as the Double, albeit an inferior one. 1941 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1941 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 55th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship ended on 28 September 1941. Limerick were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Cork in the provincial series. The championship was won by Cork who secured the title following a 5-11 to 0-6 defeat of Dublin in the All-Ireland final. This was their 12th All-Ireland title, their first in ten championship seasons. Foot-and-mouth disease There was major disruption to the format of the 1941 championship due to a serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in many parts of Munster and south Leinster. All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Ned Wade (hurler)
Ned Wade (1911-4 May 1992) was an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder and as a centre-forward for the Tipperary and Dublin senior teams. Born in Boherlahan, County Tipperary, Wade first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team before later joining the junior side. He joined the senior panel during the 1931 championship. Wade subsequently joined the Dublin senior team and won three Leinster medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on four occasions. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Wade won three Railway Cup medals. At club level he was a seven-time cham pionship medallist with Faughs.
