1940 WANFL Season
The 1940 WANFL season was the 56th season of the various incarnations of the Western Australian National Football League. It saw Claremont win its third consecutive premiership, but its last before returning to the status of cellar-dweller it occupied during its first decade in the WA(N)FL – between 1943 and 1978 Claremont played finals only five times for one premiership. South Fremantle, after a lean period in the middle 1930s, displaced perennial power clubs East Fremantle and East Perth as the Tigers’ Grand Final opponent, and established some of the basis, in spite of three disastrous wartime under-age seasons, for the club's fabled dynasty after the war. The season was severely affected by World War II, which claimed numerous players from all clubs and limited the availability of others, and also a dispute with the Perth City Council over charges for the rental of Leederville and Perth Ovals, which were not resolved fully before the season. George Moloney
George Michael Moloney (7 August 1909 – 5 January 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and for the Geelong Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). An inaugural member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame and an inaugural Legend of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame, "Specka" Moloney had a formidable reputation as a centre, a goalsneak and a key forward. He is one of few players to kick 100 or more goals in a season in both the WANFL and the VFL/AFL competitions. After four years at Claremont in the 1920s, Moloney drew strong attention as a goalsneak for Western Australia at the 1930 Adelaide Carnival. Subiaco Oval
Subiaco Oval (; nicknamed Subi) was a sports stadium in Perth, Western Australia, located in the suburb of Subiaco. It was opened in 1908 and closed in 2017 after the completion of the new Perth Stadium in Burswood. Subiaco Oval was the highest capacity stadium in Western Australia and one of the main stadiums in Australia, with a final capacity of 43,500 people. It began as the home ground for the Subiaco Football Club and from the 1930s onward was the home of Australian rules football in Western Australia. It hosted the annual grand final of the West Australian Football League (WAFL), with the ground record attendance of 52,781 set at the 1979 Grand Final. George Doig
George Ronald Doig (25 May 1913 – 27 November 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and later coached the East Fremantle Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). A member of the Doig sporting family, Doig kicked 1095 goals from his 202 games playing almost exclusively as a forward, becoming East Fremantle's leading goalkicker of all-time, and leading the WANFL's goalkicking on six occasions. He kicked more than 100 goals in a season nine times, which included a haul of 152 goals in 1934 that set an elite record which was not broken until Bernie Naylor () kicked 167 goals in 1953. Doig captained the club for two seasons, from 1940 to 1941, also filling the role of coach during the first season. Bernie Naylor
Bernard George Andrew Naylor (19 April 1923 – 26 September 1993) was an Australian rules footballer who was one of the most successful full-forwards in the history of the West Australian Football League. Climate change in Australia has been a critical issue since the beginning of the 21st century. ''The Kalgoorlie Miner'' (commonly known as ''The Miner'') is a daily newspaper circulating in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields-Esperance region, in Western Australia. Appendicitis
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Symptoms commonly include right lower abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. However, approximately 40% of people do not have these typical symptoms. Severe complications of a ruptured appendix include widespread, painful inflammation of the inner lining of the abdominal wall and sepsis. Appendicitis is caused by a blockage of the hollow portion of the appendix. This is most commonly due to a calcified "stone" made of feces. Inflamed lymphoid tissue from a viral infection, parasites, gallstone, or tumors may also cause the blockage. This blockage leads to increased pressures in the appendix, decreased blood flow to the tissues of the appendix, and bacterial growth inside the appendix causing inflammation. Ted Holdsworth
Henry Edwin Arthur Holdsworth (26 January 1917 – 23 September 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who was highly successful in the West Australian Football League, West Australian National Football League (WANFL) playing for the Swan Districts Football Club. A fine full forward who was a strong overhead mark and a very accurate kick Holdsworth topped the top goal kicker list at Swan Districts during his career. In 1937 and 1938 he kicked 109 and 116 goals respectively yet never topped the WANFL goal kickers list. Ern Henfry
Ernest Edgar "Ern" Henfry (24 July 1921 – 14 January 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played for in the West Australian Football League, Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). He later served as coach of Perth, and also coached Western Australia Australian rules football team, Western Australia, having previously played at state level for both WA and Victoria Australian rules football team, Victoria. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2014. Albert Gook
Albert Henry Gook (c. 1914 – 15 December 1964) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). He was the league's leading goalkicker in 1939. Gook began his career with South Perth in the Band of Hope Association, His senior debut for Perth came in 1933. Playing either as a centreman or at full-forward, he became known as a goal-kicking specialist, leading the club's goalkicking from the 1934 season through to the 1939 season. Gook led the WANFL's goalkicking in 1939, kicking 102 goals from 18 games. This included hauls of 10 goals against and 16 goals against . Both his season tally and his tally against West Perth are club records. Gook also represented the WANFL in seven interstate and carnival matches between 1934 and 1938, kicking 20 goals, including six against the VFL in 1938. Doug Oliphant
Douglas Oliphant (29 January 1911 – 3 March 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Perth in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Oliphant had a decorated career at Perth, culminating in him being named as a follower in the club's official Team of the Century. Also used as a key forward, he was Perth's leading goal-kicker on four occasions, in 1930, 1931, 1932 and 1940. His 84 goals in 1931 was also enough to top the league's goal-kicking. Oliphant won two best and fairests for Perth and was runner up in the 1936 Sandover Medal, to George Moloney. He also represented Western Australia at interstate football on six occasions.
