The 1939 Individual Speedway World Championship was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II. It would have been the fourth edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. Benjamin Kaufman known as Benny Kaufman (March 11, 1911 – August 31, 1998) was a speedway rider from the United States. Speedway career Kaufman was a leading speedway rider in the late 1930s. Frank Goulden
Frank Donald Goulden (1909–1976) was an international speedway rider from England. Speedway career In 1929 and 1930, Goulden was a leading rider for the Southampton Saints and helped them finish runner-up in the Southern League, during consecutive seasons. When the new National League was created in 1932, he joined the Plymouth Tigers and stayed with them until the end of the 1933 season. In 1934, he joined West Ham Hammers, in exchange for Tiger Hart. In 1932, he was selected for England for he first time, and then made regular appearances at international level until 1938. Malcolm Stewart Craven (25 September 1915 – 2 September 1984) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England, who rode before and after World War II. Aub Lawson
Aubrey "Aub" Lawson (born 5 April 1914 in Kelly's Gully, Warialda, New South Wales - died 20 January 1977) was an Australian international speedway rider who featured in ten World Championship finals including the 1939 final which was never run due to the outbreak of World War II. Career Lawson first came to the UK in 1939 and rode in two leagues for the Wembley Lions and Middlesbrough Bears but at his mother's insistence, his sister accompanied him as chaperone. It was not until after the war in 1947 that he returned to the UK when league racing started again. He joined the West Ham Hammers where he stayed for five seasons, top scoring in three of them. In 1951 he won the London Riders' Championship whilst riding for the Hammers. After a year back in Australia he returned to the UK where he joined the Norwich Stars, where he remained until he retired from racing in 1960. Eric Collins (speedway Rider)
Eric Francis Collins (5 October 1910 – 23 February 1954) was an Australian international motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the early days of speedway in the United Kingdom. Career Collins rode for Lea Bridge during the 1931 Speedway Southern League. In 1932, he then switched to Plymouth Tigers, after the formation of the National League. It was during the 1932 season that he also reached the final of the 1932 Star Riders' Championship, which was considered at the time to be the World Championship of speedway. After staying in Australia for two seasons he joined Wimbledon Dons and rode for them from 1935 to 1939. He also doubled up for Bristol Bulldogs in 1936. Eric Chitty
Eric Stephenson Chitty (28 April 1909 – 1990) was a Canadian speedway rider who won the London Riders' Championship in 1938. Early days Chitty was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Ron Johnson (Born Ronald Johnston) (24 February 1907 Duntocher, ScotlandBamford, R. & Stallworthy, D.
