The 27th Grey Cup was played on December 9, 1939, before 11,738 fans at Lansdowne Park at Ottawa. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Ottawa Rough Riders 8–7. The weekend of the match saw very low temperatures so the night before the game the groundskeepers attempted to warm the playing surface by lighting hundreds of litres of gasoline, nevertheless, the field was frozen again the next day. Winnipeg Blue Bombers
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are a professional Canadian football team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Blue Bombers compete in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member club of the league's West division. They play their home games at IG Field. Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 CFL season, 1996 season. Five years later, a new CFL team known as the Ottawa Renegades was founded, though they suspended operations in 2006. Red Threlfall
Reginald H. "Red" Threlfall (June 2, 1903 – February 14, 1971) was an American football, basketball and Canadian football coach. He served as the head football coach at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, from 1934 to 1937, compiling a record of 17–19–2. Threlfall was the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1938 to 1944. Athletic career Threlfall played tackle for four years at Waltham High School in Waltham, Massachusetts. He enrolled at Purdue University in 1922, but financial difficulties forced him to leave. He returned to Purdue in 1923 and played on the freshman football team. He played tackle and center for the varsity team from 1924 to 1926. He was also a member of the school's wrestling team. Ross Trimble
W. Ross Trimble (1908 – March 24, 1950) was a Canadian football player and coach, who was the head coach of the Ottawa Rough Riders for 6 seasons (1937–1941, 1945). They appeared in 3 Grey Cups while Trimble was coach, winning 1. Trimble also had won 2 Grey Cups with the Toronto Balmy Beach Beachers in the 1920s and 1930s.
