1938 New South Wales State Election
The 1938 New South Wales state election was held on 26 March 1938. This election was for all of the 90 seats in the 32nd New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting. The result of the election was: *United Australia Party 37 seats * Country Party 22 seats *Australian Labor Party 28 seats *Industrial Labor Party 2 seats *Independent 1 seat. The UAP/Country Party coalition of Bertram Stevens and Michael Bruxner had a majority of 28 (down 2). Stevens continued as Premier until 5 August 1939 when he resigned after being censured by the Legislative Assembly, with 10 United Australia members crossing the floor. He was replaced as Premier by Alexander Mair. Lang Labor reconciled with Labor in February 1936, however Labor's primary vote continued to decline. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Bob Heffron
Robert James Heffron (10 September 189027 July 1978), also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Party Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. Being a prominent unionist organiser, having been gaoled at one stage for "conspiracy to strike action", he was eventually elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Electoral district of Botany, Botany in 1930. Marrickville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was an urban electorate in Sydney's inner west, centred on the suburb of Marrickville from which it took its name. At the time of its abolition it also included the suburbs of Camperdown, Darlington, Enmore, Lewisham, Newtown, Petersham, Stanmore and parts of Dulwich Hill and Erskineville as well as the University of Sydney. Christopher Lethbridge (Australian Politician)
Christopher Baron Lethbridge (30 August 1883 – 8 March 1981) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1937 and 1946. He was an Independent member of parliament. Early life Lethbridge was born in Mitchell, Queensland and was the son of a clerk. He was educated at Brisbane Grammar School and became an articled clerk. He served with the First Australian Imperial Force in France during World War One. Lethbridge was admitted as a solicitor in 1920 and founded Nicholson and Lethbridge, a law firm in Corowa where he was noted for his legal representation of soldier settlers. Lethbridge was involved in community organizations including the Ambulance Board and the Corowa Race club. Lethbridge also developed a farm,'Barondale' in the Corowa region. Richard Ball (Australian Politician)
Richard Thomas Ball (14 September 1857 – 30 October 1937) was a politician and engineer in New South Wales, Australia. Early life He was born in Sydney to farmer George Ball and Ann, ''née'' Hooper. After attending primary school at Eastern Creek, he worked for several engineering companies and as a blacksmith. In 1880 he was charged with attempting to bribe Henry Parkes, the Colonial Secretary, asking for employment and offering a bonus of £50. He pleaded guilty and was not convicted on entering his own recognisance of £80 to appear when called upon. He purchased Burn and Sons foundry at Goulburn in 1881. He established his own company in 1885, but was bankrupted in 1894. Ball served on Goulburn Council from 1887 to 1894, and was mayor from 1890 to 1891. After being discharged from bankruptcy he moved to Albury to be involved in the building of the waterworks. In 1898 he moved to Sydney, practising as a mechanical engineer. Corowa was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of the Australian state of New South Wales, taking its name from town of Corowa on the Murray River. History The district was created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of parts of Albury, The Murray and the abolished seat of The Hume. It moved west in 1913, absorbing the eastern part of the abolished district of Deniliquin and losing its eastern part to the districts of Albury and Wagga Wagga. Carlo Camillo Lazzarini (; 24 April 1880 – 26 November 1952), also known as Charlie Lazzarini, was an Australian politician affiliated with the Labor Party. He was elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, where he served for 35 years. Early years The son of Italian immigrant Piedro (Peter) Lazzarini and his wife Hannah (Annie) Stubbs, Lazzarini was born at Wombat, near Young, New South Wales. He was educated at the Young convent school and Young Superior Public School, before becoming a tailor's apprentice.
