Merrylands is a suburb in Western Sydney, Australia. Merrylands is located 25 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is in the local government area of the Cumberland City Council. 1894 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1894 New South Wales colonial election was held on 17 July 1894 for all of the 125 seats in the 16th New South Wales Legislative Assembly and it was conducted in single-member constituencies with a first past the post voting system. Section 23 (1) of the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act of 1893 conferred a right to vote on 'every male person, being a natural born ritishsubject, who shall have resided or had his principal place of abode in New South Wales for a continuous period of one year'. The 15th parliament of New South Wales was dissolved on 25 June 1894 by the Governor, Sir Robert Duff, on the advice of the Premier, George Dibbs. This election saw the elimination of multi-member districts. At the previous election there had been 20 two-member districts, 10 three-member districts, and 9 four-member districts. George Smailes
George Wells Smailes (1 January 1862 – 9 January 1934) was an Australian politician in the New South Wales parliament, representing the electoral district of Granville for Labor from 17 July 1894 to 5 July 1898, and was a Methodist minister. Later he was an Anglican vicar in New Zealand, and a chaplain with the New Zealand garrison in Samoa in World War I. He apparently changed his surname from Smailes to Wells-Smailes in New Zealand. He was born in Durham, England. He moved to New South Wales in 1882, and to Sydney in 1891. He moved to New Zealand in 1902, where he was an Anglican vicar at Te Aroha then Opotiki. He was living at St Heliers, Auckland when he applied to be a chaplain in WWI, recommended by Arthur Myers Sir Arthur Mielziner Myers (19 May 1868 – 9 October 1926) was a New Zealand politician. Proportional Representation
Proportional representation (PR) refers to a type of electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to geographical (e.g. states, regions) and political divisions (political parties) of the electorate.
