New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Woollahra was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created with the abolition of multi-member constituencies in 1894 from part of Paddington, along with Waverley and Randwick. It was named after and including the Sydney suburb of Woollahra. Daniel Levy (politician)
Sir Daniel Levy (30 November 1872 – 20 May 1937) was an Australian politician. Early life He was born in London to tailor Joseph Levy and Esther, ''née'' Cohen. He arrived in Sydney in 1880 and attended Crown Street Superior School, Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney, graduating with a first in Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1893 and a Bachelor of Law in 1895, in which year he was called to the Bar. In 1902 he was admitted as a solicitor. Levy was active in Jewish affairs and was co-editor of the ''Australasian Hebrew'' newspaper in 1896 with Percy J. Marks. Political career He entered the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1901 as the Liberal member for Sydney-Fitzroy, transferring to Darlinghurst in 1904. He would represent Sydney for the period of proportional representation from 1920 to 1927, Paddington from 1927 to 1930, and Woollahra thereafter. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. Harold Mason (politician)
Harold Harvey Mason KC (28 January 1890 – 8 May 1949) was an Australian politician who represented the Electoral district of Woollahra from 26 June 1937 until 24 February 1938 as an Independent United Australia Party MP. Mason was the son of William Henry Mason, shipping master of the Port of Sydney, and Sarah Jane Dunn. He married Marjorie Frances Macken on 18 December 1914 and had one daughter and three sons with each other. He died on 8 May 1949 in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. His funeral was held at Northern Suburbs crematorium from St Mark's Church of England, Darling Point, Sydney. George McDonald (Australian Politician)
George Roy William McDonald (29 January 1883 – 28 July 1951) was an Australian politician. Legal career McDonald was born in Sydney, the son of mining engineer George McDonald and his wife Margaret McNamara. He was educated in public schools in the Parramatta district and became a deposition clerk in the Justice Department at Broken Hill in 1901. After transferral to the ministerial office in Sydney, his career as a clerk continued through appointments as Clerk of Petty Sessions at Goulburn, Albury and finally Bathurst. He resigned in 1908 and began a crown land and mining agency in Tamworth, acquiring a similar business in Sydney from 1911 to 1919. McDonald was called to the Bar in 1927 and admitted as a solicitor in 1937, establishing his own firm. He was also vice-president of the NRMA in 1924 and continued to be involved with that body. 1938 New South Wales State Election
The 1938 New South Wales state election was held on 26 March 1938. This election was for all of the 90 seats in the 32nd New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting. The result of the election was: *United Australia Party 37 seats * Country Party 22 seats *Australian Labor Party 28 seats *Industrial Labor Party 2 seats *Independent 1 seat. The UAP/Country Party coalition of Bertram Stevens and Michael Bruxner had a majority of 28 (down 2). Stevens continued as Premier until 5 August 1939 when he resigned after being censured by the Legislative Assembly, with 10 United Australia members crossing the floor. He was replaced as Premier by Alexander Mair. Lang Labor reconciled with Labor in February 1936, however Labor's primary vote continued to decline.
