1934 Miami Hurricanes Football Team
The 1934 Miami Hurricanes football team represented the University of Miami as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) in the 1934 college football season. The Hurricanes played their home games at Moore Park in Miami, Florida. The team was coached by Tom McCann, in his fourth and final year as head coach for the Hurricanes. Finishing the season with a 5–3–1 record, the Hurricanes were invited to play in the first edition of the post-season Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes lost, 26–0, to Bucknell. Tom McCann
Thomas E. McCann (November 7, 1898 – March 23, 1975) was an American baseball player and coach of football and basketball. He served as the head football coach at Tusculum College in 1924 and at the University of Miami from 1931 to 1934. McCann was also the head basketball coach at Miami during the 1928–29 and 1931–32 seasons. In 1929, he was coaching football at Plant City High School in Plant City, Florida. The 1935 Orange Bowl was an American college football bowl game between the Bucknell Bison football, Bucknell Bison and Miami Hurricanes football, Miami Hurricanes. Bucknell won the game, 26–0. The 1934 Bucknell Bison football team was an American football team that represented Bucknell University as an independent during the 1934 college football season. In its first season under head coach Edward Mylin, the team compiled a 7–2–2 record, including a victory in the first Orange Bowl game. The team's only losses were to one-loss Duquesne and undefeated Western Maryland. The team played its home games at Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. 1934 College Football Season
The 1934 college football season was the 66th season of college football in the United States. Two New Year's Day bowl games were initiated to rival the Rose Bowl Game. On February 15, Warren V. Miller and Joseph M. Cousins organized the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association and by October, the group had enough funds to sponsor the Sugar Bowl. Meanwhile, W. Keith Phillips and the Greater Miami Athletic Club worked in November at a January 1 game for Florida, and the Orange Bowl was created. Once again, University of Illinois Professor Frank Dickinson's math system selected a Big Ten team as national champion, the undefeated Minnesota Golden Gophers. William Boand and Professor Edward Earl Litkenhous also selected Minnesota at the end of the season.
