1934 Mannin Moar
The 1934 Mannin Moar (formally known as II Mannin Moar) was a Grand Prix that was held on 2 June 1934 at a street circuit in Douglas, Isle of Man, United Kingdom. It was the twelfth round of the 1934 Grand Prix season, but it did not count towards the championship. The race, contested over 50 laps of 3.659 mi, or 5.889 km, was won by Brian Lewis driving an Alfa Romeo Tipo B after starting from pole position. The Douglas Circuit was a motor racing street circuit in Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man and was re-configured each year until 1937. The first Grand Prix, titled "Mannin Beg & Mannin Moar" (''English: Small Man & Big Man'') was held in 1933 on a street circuit which repeated as II and III Mannin Moar on different circuit layouts until 1935. The Bugatti Type 51 series succeeded the famous Type 35 as Bugatti's premier racing car for the 1930s. Unlike the dominant Type 35s of the prior decade, the Type 51 (and later Type 53, Type 54, and Type 59) were unable to compete with the government-supported German and Italian offerings. Raymond Mays
Thomas Raymond Mays (1 August 1899 – 6 January 1980) was an auto racing driver and entrepreneur from Bourne, Lincolnshire, England. He attended Oundle School, where he met Amherst Villiers, leaving at the end of 1917. After army service in the Grenadier Guards in France, he attended Christ's College, Cambridge, taking his first win at Brooklands while an undergraduate. Racing career Mays was one of the principal people behind the development of the motor racing stables of English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and British Racing Motors (BRM). The workshops of each firm were established, in turn, behind the family home on Eastgate Road in Bourne. Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth (16 July 1909 – 2 August 1940) was a racing motorist, aviator and prolific collector of veteran cars and aircraft. His collection forms the nucleus of the Shuttleworth Collection. He was killed in an air crash on a night RAF training exercise in 1940. Life Family Richard Shuttleworth was the only son of Colonel Frank Shuttleworth (1845—1913) and Dorothy Clotilda (née Lang, 1879–1968), the youngest daughter of the Rev. Robert Lang, the Vicar of Old Warden; they had married in 1902. Richard Shuttleworth was the grandson of Joseph Shuttleworth (1819—1883), co-founder of Clayton & Shuttleworth. Kaye Ernest Donsky (10 April 1891 – 29 August 1981), better known by his ''nom de course'' Kaye Don, was an Irish world record breaking car and speedboat racer. He became a motorcycle dealer on his retirement from road racing and set up Ambassador Motorcycles. Early life Kaye Ernest Donsky was born in Dublin on 10 April 1891. He was of Polish ancestry and shortened his name to Don. He was brought up in Kingston-upon-Thames and was an RFC pilot during the First World War. Early racing career Kaye Don began his career as a motorcycle racer but soon switched to cars and won the inaugural 1928 Ards-Belfast circuit, Northern Ireland, Tourist Trophy with a Lea-Francis. Hugh 'Hammy' Caulfield Hamilton (18 June 1905 – 26 August 1934) was a British racing driver who was killed in the 1934 Swiss Grand Prix. He was born in Omagh, in Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It has been said that he was "perhaps the top British driver at that time efore his death. He raced with Dick Seaman on occasion, and was good friends with him. Early life Hamilton was born in Northern Ireland and moved to England in 1922. He started off as an MG salesman. He took up racing motorbikes and then in 1930 started car racing with a Riley. Races During the JCC 1000-mile race at Brooklands in 1932, driving A.T. The Alfa Romeo 8C was originally a range of Alfa Romeo road, Auto racing, race and sports cars of the 1930s. In 2004 Alfa Romeo revived the 8C name for a V8-engined concept car which made it into production for 2007, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, 8C Competizione. The 8C designates 8 cylinders, and originally a straight-8, straight 8-cylinder engine. The Vittorio Jano designed 8C was Alfa Romeo's primary racing engine from its introduction in 1931 to its retirement in 1939. Rupert Edward Lee "Buddy" Featherstonhaugh ( ; 4 October 1909 – 12 July 1976) was an English jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. Musical career Born in Paris in 1909, the son of an English marine architect and his Scottish wife. His grandfather, George William Featherstonhaugh, a geologist and geographer, had already emigrated to America. After moving to England, he studied in Sussex, and had his first professional gig with Pat O'Malley in 1927. He was with Spike Hughes from 1930 to 1932, and toured England in Billy Mason's band behind Louis Armstrong that same year and in 1933 he recorded with a group called The Cosmopolitans, which included Fletcher Allen. Maserati 8CM
The Maserati 8CM was a Grand Prix race car produced by Italian manufacturer Maserati in Bologna between 1933 and 1935. The car mounted an 8-cylinder 2991 cc straight engine and 400 mm drum brakes. Maximum power was around 220-240 hp at 5,500 rpm. The chassis had been derived from that of the 4CM 1100, which proved to be too light and was subject to flex; the situation improved when driver Tazio Nuvolari asked for a strengthening of the front part, and the weight reduced from 785 to 750 kg.
