1930 Tour Of Flanders
The 14th edition of the Tour of Flanders cycling classic race was held on Sunday, 14 April 1930. Belgian Frans Bonduel won the Monument. Of the 92 starting cyclists, 29 reached the finish. Route The race started in Ghent and covered 227 km on the way to the finish in Wetteren. Edelareberg
Edelareberg is a hill in Oudenaarde, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. With its top at 80 m, it is one of the many hill formations in the Flemish Ardennes. The top of the Edelareberg is in the village of Edelare, from which the hill takes its name. Colloquially, it is also called ''Kerselareberg'', after Kerselare, the small hamlet which is now part of Edelare. The road was asphalted in the late 1960s and is now a broad and gently rising road, part of the N8 road connecting Oudenaarde and Brakel. The steepest slopes are 7% towards the top of the climb. Cycling The hill is best known from cycling, as it is one of the many climbs in the Flemish Ardennes featuring in the spring classics. The climb has been included 35 times in the Tour of Flanders. Julien Vervaecke
Julien Vervaecke (3 November 1899 – May 1940) was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer. He won Paris–Roubaix, Paris–Brussels, 2 stages in the Tour de France and finished 3rd in the 1927 Tour de France. At the start of the Second World War Battle of Belgium, when a British army detachment wanted to take his house, he refused, and was shot. His body was found weeks later, so the exact date of his death is not known. Vervaecke was born in , Belgium, and died in Roncq, France. Alcyon was a French professional cycling team that was active from 1905 to 1959, and returned in 1961 and 1962. It was started by Alcyon, a French bicycle, automobile and motorcycle manufacturer. History The team won the Tour de France four times before World War I with François Faber in 1909, Octave Lapize in 1910, Gustave Garrigou in 1911 and Odile Defraye in 1912. Alcyon won the team prize at the Tour de France from 1909 to 1912 and then from 1927 to 1929. Immediately after the First World War, Alcyon like many other bicycle companies joined a Consortium that employed many riders under the La Sportive name. This consortium would win the Tour de France from 1919 to 1921. The Consortium stopped in 1922 and the member companies which included Automoto, Peugeot and Alcyon restarted up their separate cycling teams. Maurice De Waele (; 27 December 1896 – 14 February 1952) was a Belgium, Belgian professional road bicycle racer. De Waele placed 2nd in the 1927 Tour de France, 1927 Tour, an hour and fifty eight minutes Nicolas Frantz and 3rd in 1928 Tour de France, 1928, again won by Frantz. However, he is most famous for winning the 1929 Tour de France. He led the Tour until stage seven when two punctures on the way to Bordeaux cost him the yellow jersey to no less than three other rides on the same time in the general classification, Frantz, Andre Leducq and Victor Fontan. Fontan was the sole leader of the race when a broken bike led to his retirement, leaving De Waele in the lead, seventy five seconds ahead of Frantz. However, punctures to De Waele gave the lead to his nearest rival until he too suffered the same problem.
