1928 VFL Grand Final
The 1928 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 29 September 1928. It was the 30th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1928 VFL season. The match, attended by 50,026 spectators, was won by Collingwood by a margin of 33 points, marking that club's seventh premiership victory and second in succession. Gary Ablett, Sr
Gary Ablett Sr. (born 1 October 1961), is a former professional Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Australian Football League (AFL). Nicknamed "God", Ablett is widely regarded as one of Australian football's greatest players, and was especially renowned for his high-flying spectacular marks and his prolific goalkicking. After playing for several country teams in and around his hometown of Drouin, Victoria, Ablett was recruited by Hawthorn and made his Victorian Football League (VFL) debut in 1982. However, he struggled to adjust to city life and retreated to Myrtleford the following year. Len Murphy
Leonard Murphy (23 November 1909 – 20 December 1996) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His older brother Frank played beside him for much of his career. Football Murphy played mainly in the ruck and was a member of a Collingwood side which was a force in the VFL during the 1930s. They had just won a premiership when he joined the club and his debut season of 1928 saw them go back to back, with Murphy kicking two goals in their grand final win over Richmond. Collingwood won the flag again in 1929 and 1930 with Murphy a member of both premiership sides. Jack Fincher (footballer)
John Alexander Fincher (27 November 1904 – 4 October 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond and Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family One of the nine children (six boys and three girls) of George Francis Fincher (1865–1959), and Margaret Lawrence Fincher (c.1866–1956), née Nicoll, John Alexander Fincher was born in Lauriston, Victoria on 27 November 1904. His elder brother Charlie played at South Melbourne, and was killed in the very first landings at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Joe Murdoch
Arthur "Joe" Murdoch (30 October 1908 – 26 December 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL in between 1927 and 1936 for the Richmond Football Club. Murdoch was an exceptionally tough defender who was at the forefront of an exceptional backline that held the formidable South Melbourne and Collingwood attacks numerous times in important matches during the 1930s. For his size, Murdoch had exceptionally good ground skills and would always use his strength to his advantage when the ball was loose. William Edward Libbis (2 July 1903 – 15 August 1986) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family William Edward Libbis was born in Port Melbourne, Victoria on 2 July 1903. He married Stella Millicent Hannebery (1905-1961) in 1929. Collingwood Libbis was a rover and made his debut in 1925. Albert Collier, also known as Leeter Collier (9 July 1909 – 22 February 1988), was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League. Personal life Albert Collier was born on 9 July 1909 in Collingwood, the seventh of the ten children of Albert Augustus Collier, signwriter, and his wife Hannah Josephine, née Binks, Albert grew up living opposite Victoria Park, the home ground of the Collingwood Football Club and was educated at the nearby Victoria Park State School. He later married Mavis Thelma Leibie (1917–2003) and they had two sons. Albert Collier died in 1988 at his home in Seaford and is buried at Frankston Cemetery.
