The president of Chile ( es, Presidente de Chile), officially known as the President of the Republic of Chile ( es, Presidente de la República de Chile), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Chile. The president is responsible for both the Government of Chile and state administration. Although its role and significance has changed over the history of Chile, as well as its position and relations with other actors in the national political organization, it is one of the most prominent political offices. It is also considered one of the institutions that make up the "Historic Constitution of Chile", and is essential to the country's political stability. Liberal Party (Chile, 1849–1966)
The Liberal Party (''Partido Liberal'') of Chile was a Chilean political party created by a faction of pipiolos in 1849. After the conservative victory in the Chilean Civil War of 1829 the liberals became the principal opposition party to the Conservative Party. During the Liberal Party's early history one of its main goal was to create a new constitution to replace the Chilean Constitution of 1833. Rigged election helped to prevent the Liberal Party's presidential candidates to be elected until 1861, during that time elements of the liberal party made attempts to overthrow the government, these were the Revolution of 1851 and the Revolution of 1859. These failed insurrections led many liberals to emigrate, among them Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna. In 1863 a group of liberal split off to form the Radical Party which would hold power from 1938 to 1952. Sofanor Parra Hermosilla (20 October 1850 – 2 November 1925), was a Chilean military officer who served in the Chilean Army, in the cavalry branch, and who reached the rank of divisional general. He is known for having been in all the land campaigns of the War of the Pacific, participating in several military actions, as part of the Regiment Mounted Hunters, with which he gained great prestige in the Chilean Army. Family He was the son of José Luis Parra Sepúlveda and Narcisa Hermosilla y Godoy. He had four brothers: Abdón, Felisario, Abelardo and Matilde. Sofanor Parra married Clarisa Mujica Mardones at some point in his life. Early life Parra was born in the town of San Carlos, on 20 October 1850. Biography Pimstein was the seventh child of nine in a Belarusian Jewish family (from Minsk), which owns a glass shop in Barrio Brasil in Santiago. His fondness for the romantic and melodramatic stories born under the eaves of his mother, a frequent consumer of Mexican films and soap operas, and developed in parallel with his interest in theater. Carlos Claudio Spies (March 26, 1925 – April 2, 2020) was a Chilean-American composer. Biography Early life Born in Santiago, Chile, of German Jewish parents, Spies completed primary and secondary education in Santiago in 1941, when he passed the Bachillerato. Erich Kleiber and Fritz Busch were mentors to Spies at an early age. Spies came to the United States in August 1942 to study music at New England Conservatory and Longy School of Music, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and, after her departure for California, with Harold Shapero. He entered Harvard College in February 1947. One of his most influential teachers at Harvard was Irving Fine, and another was Otto Gombosi. Julio Canessa
Lieutenant General Julio Canessa Roberts (19 March 1925 – 24 January 2015) was a Chilean military and political figure. He was a member of the Government Junta of Chile (1973), Government Junta that ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990, representing the Chilean Army, Army. He was also a designated Senator between 1998 and 2006. General Canessa was Army Vice Commander-in-chief from 1983 to 1985 and a member of the Government Junta of Chile (1973), Government Junta from 1985 to 1986. He was replaced by Humberto Gordon. In 1998, he was designated Senator after a nomination from the National Security Council. As a Senator he opposed the Concert of Parties for Democracy on the Indigenous peoples in Chile, Indigenous law, seeing it as bad for development, and in 2001 he defended landmines as necessary.
