The president of Chile ( es, Presidente de Chile), officially known as the President of the Republic of Chile ( es, Presidente de la República de Chile), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Chile. The president is responsible for both the Government of Chile and state administration. Michelle Bachelet
Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria (; born 29 September 1951) is a Chilean politician who served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2018 to 2022. She previously served as President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and 2014 to 2018 for the Socialist Party of Chile; she is the first woman to hold the Chilean presidency and the first elected female leader in South America. After leaving the presidency in 2010 and while not immediately reelectable, she was appointed the first executive director of the newly created United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In December 2013, Bachelet was reelected with over 62% of the vote, bettering the 54% she obtained in 2006. She was the first President of Chile to be reelected since 1932. 2017 Chile Wildfires
A series of wildfires burned across Chile during January 2017. Impact On January 27–28, a wildfire described as the worst in Chile's modern history killed at least 11 people, including five firefighters and destroyed the town of Santa Olga in the central Maule Region, displacing thousands of people. Reactions On January 20, the Chilean government declared a state of emergency in response to the wildfires. Santa Olga was a town in the Talca Province in central Chile's Maule Region. History Santa Olga emerged in the 1960s as an illegal settlement. In April 2016, 60 families regularized their situation, being granted titles of dominion over their homes. 2017 fire On January 27, 2017, the town was destroyed by the worst wildfire in Chile's modern history.
