General elections were held in Cuba on 1 November 1924.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p203 Gerardo Machado won the presidential election running under the Liberal–Popular Coalition banner, whilst the coalition also emerged as the largest faction in the House of Representatives, winning 31 of the 53 seats. The Liberal Party of Cuba (), was one of the major political parties in Cuba from 1910 until the Cuban Revolution in the late 1950s, when it was exiled. The Congress of Cuba () was the legislature of Cuba from 1902 until the Cuban revolution of 1959. The Congress consisted of the 150-member Chamber of Representatives (''Cámara de Representantes'') and the 54-member Senate (''Cámara del Senado''). The first Cuban Congress met for the first time on May 5, 1902. Generally, Congress held at least two sessions during a given year. Meetings were interrupted by the Second Occupation of Cuba after the session of September 28, 1906. Following the re-establishment of Cuban based government in 1909 it met without interruption from January 13, 1909 until April 1933, a few months before President Gerardo Machado was overthrown. Gerardo Machado
Gerardo Machado y Morales (28 September 1869 – 29 March 1939) was a general of the Cuban War of Independence and President of Cuba from 1925 to 1933. Machado entered the presidency with widespread popularity and support from the major political parties. However, his support declined over time. Many people objected to his running again for re-election in 1928, as his victory violated his promise to serve for only one term. As protests and rebellions became more strident, his administration curtailed free speech and used repressive police tactics against opponents. Ultimately, in 1933, Machado was forced to step down in favor of a provisional government headed by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada and brokered by US ambassador Sumner Welles.
