1923 FAI Cup Final
The 1923 FAI Cup Final was contested by League of Ireland side Shelbourne of Dublin and Alton United of Belfast's Fall's League on 17 March at Dalymount Park, Dublin. Matchday summary Given the turbulent political situation in Dublin at the time, Alton United were given an armed escort from Amiens Street Station by the IRA. The Dubliners who were red hot favourites to lift the trophy in only its second year, played well below par and the visitors won it through the only goal. Alton's players were presented with their medals after the game, but the Football Association of Ireland refused them permission to take the trophy back to Belfast with them due to the tense political situation there. Shortly after Alton affiliated to the Irish Football Association and therefore never defended the trophy the following season. League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. Mick Foley (footballer)
Mick Foley was an Ireland international footballer. Foley began his senior career with Shelbourne in Dublin but then was one of three Shelbourne players recruited by Frank Scott-Walford to play for Leeds City before the 1910–11 season, the others being George Cunningham and Joe Enright. After two seasons where he did regularly feature in the first team, Foley then broke into the left half position for the 1912/13 season and held down the place for two more seasons until World War I during which he returned to his native Dublin. Mick was again part of the Leeds side on the resumption of league football in 1918/19. But the club were wound up in October 1919 and Mick returned to Ireland to rejoin Shelbourne where he was a member of the team that were founder members of the League of Ireland in 1921. The FAI Cup 1922–23 was the second edition of Ireland's premier cup competition, The Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup or FAI Cup. The tournament began on 6 January 1923 and concluded on 17 March with the final held at Dalymount Park, Dublin. An official attendance of 14,000 people watched Belfast side Alton United of the Falls League defeat Shelbourne 1-0. Val Harris
Valentine Harris (Irish: ''Vailintín Ó hEarchaí''; 23 June 1884 in Ringsend, Dublin, Ireland – 9 November 1963), commonly referred to as Val Harris, was an Irish footballer who played Gaelic football for the Dublin county team and soccer for, among others Shelbourne, Everton and Ireland. Harris was regarded as one of the finest soccer players of his generation and in 1906 became the first Shelbourne player capped by Ireland. He still remains the club's most capped player. In 1913 he captained the first Ireland team to beat England and in 1914 he was a member of the Ireland team that won the British Home Championship.
