1922–23 FAI Cup
The FAI Cup 1922–23 was the second edition of Ireland's premier cup competition, The Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup or FAI Cup. The tournament began on 6 January 1923 and concluded on 17 March with the final held at Dalymount Park, Dublin. An official attendance of 14,000 people watched Belfast side Alton United of the Falls League defeat Shelbourne 1-0. The Falls League's affiliation to the FAI, rather than the IFA, allowed the club to compete in the cup. First round Second round Semi-finals ---- Final Notes A. The 1923 FAI Cup Final was contested by League of Ireland side Shelbourne of Dublin and Alton United of Belfast's Fall's League on 17 March at Dalymount Park, Dublin. Matchday summary Given the turbulent political situation in Dublin at the time, Alton United were given an armed escort from Amiens Street Station by the IRA. The Dubliners who were red hot favourites to lift the trophy in only its second year, played well below par and the visitors won it through the only goal. Alton's players were presented with their medals after the game, but the Football Association of Ireland refused them permission to take the trophy back to Belfast with them due to the tense political situation there. Shortly after Alton affiliated to the Irish Football Association and therefore never defended the trophy the following season. Harry Buckle
Harry Buckle (6 March 1882, Belfast – 1965) was an Irish footballer who played for Sunderland and the Ireland national football team. Club career He made his debut for Sunderland, after joining from Irish side Cliftonville, against Stoke City on 8 November 1902 in a 1–1 draw. He went on to make 44 league appearances scoring 14 goals for Sunderland, before moving onto Portsmouth helping them to win a trophy. He had a short stay at the south coast side, and quickly moved onto Bristol Rovers and became the third player to receive international recognition for the club. Coventry City was his next club as he combined playing and managerial roles, to become Coventry's first ever manager. Buckle then moved around Irish clubs; Belfast Celtic, Glenavon, Belfast United and Fordsons before retiring from playing. Rathmines () is an affluent inner suburb on the Southside of Dublin in Ireland. It lies three kilometres south of the city centre.
