1916 United States Presidential Election In Maine
The 1916 United States presidential election in Maine took place on November 7, 1916, as part of the 1916 United States presidential election, which was held throughout all the contemporary 48 states. Voters chose six representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Maine was won by the Republican nominee, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes of New York, and his running mate Senator Charles W. Fairbanks of Indiana. They defeated Democratic nominees, incumbent Democratic President Woodrow Wilson and Vice President Thomas R. Marshall. Hughes won Maine by a narrow margin of 4.02%. Nevertheless, Wilson won the election nationally by a narrow margin of 23 electoral votes. Thomas Riley Marshall
Thomas Riley Marshall (March 14, 1854 – June 1, 1925) was an American politician who served as the 28th vice president of the United States from 1913 to 1921 under President Woodrow Wilson. A prominent lawyer in Indiana, he became an active and well known member of the Democratic Party by stumping across the state for other candidates and organizing party rallies that later helped him win election as the 27th governor of Indiana. In office, he attempted to implement changes from his progressive agenda to the Constitution of Indiana, but his efforts proved controversial and were blocked by the Indiana Supreme Court. Lincoln County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maine. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,237. Its seat is Wiscasset. The county was founded in 1760 by the Massachusetts General Court from a portion of York County, Massachusetts and named after the English city Lincoln, the birthplace of Massachusetts Bay Provincial Governor Thomas Pownall. At its founding, Lincoln County accounted for three-fifths of the state's land, and stretched east to Nova Scotia. Ira Landrith (March 23, 1865 – October 11, 1941) was an American Presbyterian minister and temperance activist. A known orator, Landrith was part of the Flying Squadron of America, which traveled the United States advocating for temperance. Life Landrith was educated at Trinity University and Cumberland University. From 1893 to 1894 he served as the general secretary of the Religious Education Association and as general secretary of the Presbyterian Brotherhood of America from 1907 to 1909.
