George Cobb (coach)
George Robert Cobb (August 26, 1885 – February 13, 1957) was an American football and basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Rhode Island State College—now known as the University of Rhode Island—from 1909 to 1911 and again from 1913 to 1914, compiling a record of a 17–16–5. Cobb was also the head basketball coach at Rhode Island State from 1910 to 1913, tallying a mark of 13–9, and the school's athletic director from 1909 to 1916. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1908. Cobb died on February 13, 1957, as Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. The Brown–Rhode Island football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Brown Bears and Rhode Island Rams. History They have met 106 times. They have played annually since 1909, except for 1918, 1923–24, 1943–45, 1992, and 2020. Since 1981, the Governor's Cup is given to the winner of the game. East Greenwich Academy
The East Greenwich Academy (originally known as Kent Academy) was a private Methodist boarding school in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, USA that was in existence from 1802 until 1943. History The school was founded in 1802 by eight prominent men from East Greenwich and Warwick, who served as stockholders of the school. The campus was built on five acres of farmland belonging to Ethan Clark, which overlooked Narragansett Bay. In 1841 the Providence Conference Seminary of the Methodist Episcopal Church took over the school and by the mid-nineteenth century nearly three fourths of all Rhode Island teachers were alumni of the academy. After dwindling enrollment during the Great Depression and World War II, the academy closed in 1943. The town of East Greenwich purchased the buildings and used them as a school for several years until many of them were demolished in the 1960s.
