''1914'' is a board wargame published by Avalon Hill in 1968 that simulates the first few months of World War I on the Western Front. Description ''1914'' is a two-player corps-level simulation of the first few weeks of World War I on the Western Front. With a 22" x 28" mounted hex grid game map, almost 400 double-sided die-cut counters, a mobilization chart pad for secret deployment, and various charts and instructions including a Battle Manual, the game was considered highly complex. The game scale is 2 days per turn, with approximately 16 km per hex. The map covers the terrain from Mainz, Germany in the east to Le Havre, France in the west, and from the southern portion of the Netherlands in the north to the northern edge of Switzerland in the south. Don Turnbull was a journalist, editor, games designer, and an accomplished piano and pinball player. He was particularly instrumental in introducing ''Dungeons & Dragons'' into the UK, both as the managing director of TSR UK Ltd and as the editor of the ''Fiend Folio''. ''Albion'' is a small press magazine focussed on the game of ''Diplomacy'' that was published from 1969 to 1975 by Don Turnbull. Development and publication history In the mid-1960s, Don Turnbull became interested in the game of ''Diplomacy'', and specifically in the development of a play-by-mail version. ''Tannenberg'' is a board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1969 that simulates the Battle of Tannenberg on World War I's Eastern Front. The game was created by game designer Jim Dunnigan as a companion piece for Avalon Hill's Western Front wargame ''1914'', also designed by Dunnigan. Although ''Tannenberg'' could be played as a standalone game, rules were included to combine it and ''1914'' into a two-front wargame. In board wargames, a zone of control (ZOC) is the area directly adjacent to certain combat forces that affects the movement and actions of enemy combat units. In hexagonal tiled maps, a combat unit's zone of control is the six hexagons adjacent to the hexagon occupied by a unit. The effects of zones of control can vary significantly between different wargame rules. The most common effect is that moving combat units must stop when entering an enemy unit's zone of control. This type of zone of control is termed "rigid" zone of control. If movement is not stopped, but only prohibited when moving directly from one zone of control space to another, this is termed "semi-rigid".
