National Association Foot Ball League
The National Association Football League (also spelled ''National Association Foot Ball League'') (NAFBL) was a semi-professional U.S. soccer league which operated between 1895 and 1898. The league was reconstituted in 1906 and continued to operate until 1921. History In April 1895, the NAFBL began operation as the third significant U.S. soccer league. It drew its teams primarily from northern New Jersey and New York City. Few records exist for the league, but the teams and standings for four of the five seasons do exist. After its first spring-summer season in 1895, the NAFBL moved to a winter schedule in the fall of 1895. On December 16, 1895, the NAFBL opened its second season with a game pitting the Kearny Scottish-Americans and the International Athletic Club. Brooklyn Field Club was a soccer team based in Brooklyn, New York, that existed from 1898 to 1924. It is one of the few to predate the United States Soccer Federation, which was founded in 1913. Between 1909 and 1916 they played in the second National Association Football League (NAFBL), winning the 1913–1914 title. The team was the first to win the National Challenge Cup, the earliest version of what was to be known from 1999 as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1914 defeating Brooklyn Celtic in the final 2–1. The New York Clan MacDonald were a Scottish American professional soccer club. They spent several seasons in both the National Association Football League and New York State Football Association. History In 1907, Clan MacDonald joined the National Association Football League (NAFBL). They finished sixth and withdrew from the NAFBL, joining the New York State Football Association (NYSFA). The NYSFA was broken into a Saturday and Sunday league. The Clan MacDonald won the Sunday league, but lost to Hollywood Inn F.C. of the Saturday league in the championship game. In 1913, they rejoined the NAFBL, playing through the end of the 1914-1915 season. While they registered with the league prior to the 1915-1916 season, they withdrew before the first game of the season. Newark Football Club was an early twentieth century U.S. soccer team which played in several leagues including the National Association Football League and Eastern Soccer League. History In 1906, Newark F.C. entered the professional National Association Football League. Finishing a respectable fourth, they jumped to the top of the standings during the 1907-1908 season. In 1909, Newark began the season in the NAFBL, but withdrew during the season. At the same time, it took part in the failed first Eastern Soccer League (ESL). The ESL was created as a “super league” of top east coast teams who would compete both in the ESL and their home leagues. The ESL completed less than half of the scheduled games before collapsing. The club presently plays in the Eastern Premier Soccer League, which is a United States Adult Soccer Association-affiliated league and an amateur affiliate of the professional third tier National Independent Soccer Association. It spent most of its existence as an amateur team and also played four complete seasons in the professional National Association Football League. League Bronx United spent the 1908–1909 season in the New York State Football Association. The team finished ninth out of eleven teams in the Sunday League.
