Portugal
Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic ( pt, República Portuguesa, links=yes ), is a country whose mainland is located on the Iberian Peninsula of Southwestern Europe, and whose territory also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. José Simões
José Ribeiro Simões Costa (15 June 1913 – 19 July 1944), known as Simões, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a right-back. Club career Simões spent his entire career with C.F. Os Belenenses, always in the Primeira Liga. He was part of the squad that won the 1941–42 Taça de Portugal. Simões died on 19 July 1944, aged 31. International career Simões won 10 caps for Portugal over five years. He made his debut on 26 January 1936, in a 3–2 friendly defeat against Austria held in Porto. On 28 November 1937, before the start of another exhibition game, against Spain in Vigo, Simões, as well as teammates Mariano Amaro, João Azevedo and Artur Quaresma, refused to perform the fascist salute, being subsequently questioned by PIDE. Rita Amada De Jesus
Rita Lopes de Almeida (religious name ''Rita Amada de Jesus,'' 5 March 1848 – 6 January 1913), was a Portuguese religious sister and the founder of the Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. She was called "Apostle of the Rosary, Apostle of the Eucharist, ndApostle of the Family" and one of the greatest Christian teachers of her time. She worked with the poor and founded schools for the children of single mothers, despite the religious persecution in Portugal at the time. Almeida was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. As of 2020, the Sisters of Mary, Jesus and Joseph were in nine countries, including in Brazil, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding there in 2012. Álvaro Cunhal
Álvaro Barreirinhas Cunhal (; 10 November 1913 – 13 June 2005) was a Portuguese communist revolutionary and politician. He was one of the major opponents of the dictatorial regime of the '' Estado Novo''. He served as secretary-general of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) from 1961 to 1992. He was one of the most pro-Soviet of all Western Europe communist leaders, often supporting the Soviet Union's foreign policies, including the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. During the 1970s, Cunhal supported Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev’s political agenda, and strongly opposed Mikhail Gorbachev’s ''perestroika'' policies in the 1980s. António Martins (footballer)
António Rodrigues Martins (27 July 1913 – deceased) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Born in Lisbon, Martins arrived at Sporting CP in 1934, as a 21-year-old, spending the first two seasons in the reserve squad. With Azevedo as undisputed starter, and four league matches in two seasons, he left the ''Lions'' in 1938, to join Benfica. In his first season, he beat Amaro for the keeper position, debuting on 2 October 1938 in a loss against his former team. Over the course of nine seasons, he added more than 140 appearances, winning three league titles, until he lost his place to Rosa in 1946, after representing the club on 265 matches. He received one cap, in a 3–0 win against Switzerland on 1 January 1942.
