1911 FA Charity Shield
The 1911 FA Charity Shield was the fourth Charity Shield, an annual football match contested by the winners of the previous season's Football League and Southern League competitions. The match was played on 25 September 1911 between Manchester United, winners of the 1910–11 Football League, and Swindon Town, winners of the 1910–11 Southern League. Manchester United won the match 8–4 in front of only 10,000 fans at Stamford Bridge, London. The match remains the highest scoring match in Charity Shield history. Harold Halse scored six goals for Manchester United in this match, a record for the most goals scored by an individual in a Charity Shield match. It is also a record for the most goals scored by an individual Manchester United player in one match, a record that was not equalled for almost 60 years, until George Best in an 8–2 win over Northampton Town on 7 February 1970. FA Community Shield
The Football Association Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) is English football's annual match contested at Wembley Stadium between the champions of the previous Premier League season and the holders of the FA Cup. If the Premier League champions also won the FA Cup, then the league runners-up provide the opposition. The fixture is recognised as a competitive super cup by The Football Association and UEFA. Organised by the FA, proceeds from the game are distributed to community initiatives and charities around the country. Revenue from the gate receipts and match programme sales is distributed to the 124 clubs who competed in the FA Cup from the first round onwards, for onward distribution to charities and projects of their choice, while the remainder is distributed to the FA's national charity partners. George Wall
George Wall (20 February 1885 – June 1962) was an English association football, footballer. Career Born in The Boldons, Boldon Colliery, County Durham, Wall started his career with Boldon Royal Rovers and played for Whitburn and Jarrow F.C., Jarrow before joining Barnsley F.C., Barnsley in 1903. In almost three years with Barnsley, Wall scored 24 league goals at a rate of almost one goal in every three games. In 1906, he transferred to Manchester United F.C., Manchester United and helped them win the 1908 and 1911 league titles, as well as the 1909 FA Cup. He left the club in 1915 because of World War I and joined Oldham Athletic A.F.C., Oldham Athletic after the war in 1919. During the First World War George Wall served in the Black Watch Regiment. Ernest Mangnall
James Ernest Mangnall (4 January 1866 – 13 January 1932) was an English football manager who started his career with Burnley and managed Manchester United between 1903–1912 and then went on to manage Manchester City from 1912–1924, and is the only man to have managed both clubs. Managerial career Burnley Born in Bolton, Lancashire, Mangnall played amateur football as a goalkeeper and was a director at Bolton Wanderers. He started his career in football management with Burnley in March 1900, when he was hired as the club's second official manager following the departure of Harry Bradshaw almost a year earlier. The side were struggling when he joined the club, and with just one month of the 1899–1900 season remaining, relegation to the Second Division seemed almost inevitable. Mickey Hamill
Michael Hamill (19 January 1889 – 23 July 1943) was an Irish association football wing half who played professionally in Ireland, Scotland, England and the United States. A native of West Belfast, he learned to play Gaelic football before turning to association football. His first clubs were St Paul's Swifts and Belfast Rangers. After signing for Belfast Celtic F.C., Belfast Celtic, he made his debut against Shelbourne F.C., Shelbourne in 1909, but only became a first-team regular at inside-right from 1910 onwards. A skilful performance in a friendly against Celtic F.C., Celtic led to Manchester United F.C., Manchester United signing him for a new record fee of £175 on New Year's Eve 1910. Billy Meredith
William Henry Meredith (30 July 1874 – 19 April 1958) was a Welsh professional footballer. He was considered one of the early superstars of football due to his performances, notably for Manchester City and Manchester United. He won each domestic trophy in the English football league and gained 48 caps for Wales, for whom he scored 11 goals and won two British Home Championship titles. His favoured position was outside right, and his key skills were dribbling, passing, crossing and shooting. A dedicated and extremely fit professional, his habit of chewing on a toothpick during games made him instantly recognisable. Alexander Bell (20 October 1882 – 30 November 1934) was a association football, footballer who played as a wing half. His professional career was mostly spent in England, where he won trophies with Manchester United F.C., Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers F.C., Blackburn Rovers. Born in South Africa, he was largely raised in Scotland and made one appearance for the Scotland national football team, Scottish national team. Charlie Roberts
Charles Roberts (6 April 1883 – 7 August 1939) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre-half in the Football League for Grimsby Town, Manchester United and Oldham Athletic. He spent nine years at United, where he was captain, helping the club to two First Division titles and an FA Cup. He won three caps for England in 1905. Dick Duckworth (footballer Born 1882)
Richard Hargreaves Duckworth (14 September 1882 – Q3 1965) was an English footballer who played as a wing half for Manchester United, with whom he won the Football League twice and the FA Cup once. Career Born in Manchester, he played for Smedley Road School and as a youth player for Harpurhey Wesleyan Juniors, Rossall Mission and Stretford.Dykes (1994), p. 116. George Stacey (footballer)
George William Stacey (April 1881 – 1972) was an English footballer who played at left back for several English football clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Manchester United. Born in Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, Stacey began his career with Thorpe Hesley F.C. before signing for Sheffield Wednesday in May 1902. He then joined Barnsley in August 1905, via a short spell with Thornhill United. In April 1907, he was sold to Manchester United for a fee of £200. Stacey made his Manchester United debut on 12 October 1907, playing at left back in a 6–1 away win over Newcastle United. That season, he made 18 league appearances and scored one goal as United won the First Division title by nine points over Aston Villa - the first major trophy in Manchester United's history. Leslie Hofton
Leslie Brown Hofton (3 March 1888 – January 1971) was an English footballer who played as a full-back for Manchester United in two spells in the 1910s. Born in Sheffield, Hofton began his career at Kiveton Park, before moving to Glossop via Worksop Town and Denaby United in April 1908. In July 1910, Hofton became Manchester United's first £1,000 signing, beating the previous club record of £700, which was spent on Alex Bell in 1903. However, despite his record price tag, it took Hofton seven months to make his United debut, appearing for the first time away to Newcastle United on 18 February 1911. He then left the club on a free transfer in May 1913. Hugh Edmonds
Hugh Edmonds (1877 – ''unknown'') was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Born in Chryston, Lanarkshire, Edmonds began his career with Hamilton Academical, where he was loaned to Celtic for a match in the one-off 1902 British League Cup, then won three Lanarkshire Cups and the 1903–04 Scottish Division Two title, before moving across the Irish Sea to Belfast in 1907 to play for Distillery. He then played for Linfield before joining English Second Division champions Bolton Wanderers in October 1909. Bob Jefferson
Robert William Jefferson (June 1882 – July 1966) was an English professional football player and manager. Early life Robert William Jefferson was born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, Tyne and Wear in 1882. He left school to join the Royal Navy, before deserting after a few weeks to become an apprentice moulder at a foundry back in Sunderland. At this time, he began playing junior football with local team Sunderland Royal Rovers, before becoming a professional footballer. Jefferson served as a corporal in the Royal Air Force during the First World War. Career Jefferson played primarily as an outside right, but could play at any forward or wing position.
