1909 Inter-State Series
The 1909 Inter-State Series was the inaugural inter-state ice hockey championship in Australia. The series The first inter-state ice hockey championship was held between a state representative team from Victoria and from New South Wales. This tournament was a best-of-3 format and saw Victoria win the series 2 games to 1. New South Wales was represented by a newly formed team in 1909 and traveled to Melbourne on 29 August 1909 which marked the first national interstate competition for senior men's hockey in Australia. ;Game one 31 August 1909 as the first interstate ice hockey championship series to take place in Australia, there was anticipation for the event in the media. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. Australian Ice Hockey League
The Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) is Australia's top-level ice hockey league. Established in 2000, the AIHL is sanctioned by Ice Hockey Australia (a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation). The league is run by its own board of directors led by the AIHL commissioner. The AIHL is considered a semi-professional league with players receiving a variety of benefits such as a weekly stipend, travel expenses, motor vehicles and accommodation. The AIHL champion is awarded the Goodall Cup, the world's third oldest ice hockey trophy, having been first awarded in 1909. The AIHL is currently contested by eight franchised teams from five Australian states and territories. Goals Against Average
Goals against average (GAA) also known as "average goals against" or "AGA" is a statistic used in field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and water polo that is the mean of goals allowed per game by a goaltender or goalkeeper (depending on sport). GAA is analogous to a baseball pitcher's earned run average (ERA). In Japanese, the same translation (防御率) is used for both GAA and ERA, because of this. For ice hockey, the goals against average statistic is the number of goals a goaltender allows per 60 minutes of playing time. It is calculated by taking the number of goals against, multiply that by 60 (minutes) and then dividing by the number of minutes played. The modification is used by the NHL since 1965 and the IIHF since 1990. When calculating GAA, overtime goals and time on ice are included, whereas empty net and shootout goals are not. Arthur Cuthbertson
Arthur Cuthbertson (1888–1925 ) was an Australian ice hockey player, who represented New South Wales in the first two Goodall Cups. Biography Cuthbertson was the grandson of the Rev. William Cuthbertson who was a minister of the Pitt Street Congregational Church, Sydney and his parents were William and Edith Cuthbertson of "Arricca" 10 Appian Way, Burwood. His father was a director of Buzacott and Co., Ltd., and a deacon of the Burwood Congregatlonal Church, where his family worshipped. Cuthbertson attended Newington College (1900–1906) and his Headmaster, Dr Charles Prescott, said later that he had a successful school career, and was prominent in sport: "He was a splendid footballer, cricket, too, strongly appealed to him."
