The 1909 Cincinnati football team was an American football team that represented the University of Cincinnati as an independent during the 1909 college football season. In their first season under head coach Robert Burch, the team compiled a 4–3–1 record. Ernest DuBray was the team captain. The team played its home games at Carson Field in Cincinnati. Robert Burch (American Football)
Robert Boyd Burch (August 11, 1886 – November 15, 1967) was an American football player and coach and judge. He served as the head coach at the University of Cincinnati from 1909 to 1911, compiling a record of 16–8–2. Burch played college football at Yale University and was captain of the 1908 Yale Bulldogs football team. Burch moved to San Diego, California San Diego ( , ; ) is a city on the Pacific Ocean coast of Southern California located immediately adjacent to the Mexico–United States border. Nippert Stadium
James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium is an outdoor stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. Primarily used for American football, it is the home field of the Cincinnati Bearcats football team. The stadium has also been used as a soccer venue, serving as the home of FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer from their inaugural 2016 USL season through the 2020 MLS season, following which they moved to TQL Stadium. 1909 College Football Season
The 1909 college football season was the first for the 3-point field goal, which had previously been worth 4 points. The season ran from Saturday, September 25, until Thanksgiving Day, November 25, although a few games were played on the week before. The 1909 season was also one of the most dangerous in the history of college football. The third annual survey by the ''Chicago Tribune'' at season's end showed that 10 college players had been killed and 38 seriously injured in 1909, up from six fatalities and 14 maimings in 1908. Schools in the Midwest competed in the Western Conference consisting of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin and Chicago.
