Joe Curtis
John Spencer "Big Joe" Curtis (November 14, 1882 – January 29, 1972) was an American football player and coach. While playing for the University of Michigan, he was selected as a first-team All-Western tackle three consecutive years from 1904 to 1906 and as an All-American in 1904 and 1905. In his four seasons as the starting left tackle for the Michigan Wolverines, the team compiled a record of 37–2–1, won two national championships and outscored opponents by a combined total of 1,699 to 60. Curtis later served as the head football coach at Tulane University from 1907 to 1908 and at the Colorado School of Mines in 1909. Carroll Field
Carroll Field was owned by Baylor University; the Baylor Bears football program played games there from 1906 to 1925, and from 1930 to 1935. Following the construction of the Carroll Science Building in 1902, the field was located between the building and Waco Creek; the field took over as the location of football games from an unnamed field adjacent to and northwest of Old Main. Lee Carroll made a donation for the field to be constructed, and his father and grandfather had also donated to build the Carroll Science Building and Carroll Library. From 1926 to 1929, Baylor football games were played at the Cotton Palace in Waco. Clark Field, originally known as Varsity Athletic Field, was a stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Pelican Park (New Orleans)
Pelican Park was a sports stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1908 to 1914. The ballpark was bound by South Carrollton Avenue, Palmyra Street, Banks Street and Scott Street. A contest was conducted to name the new ballpark. "Pelican Park" won out over scores of other entries. When Pelican Park was demolished in 1914, the park's wooden grandstand was disassembled and relocated several blocks down Carrollton Avenue by mules to the intersection of Carrollton Avenue and Tulane Avenue. The 1908 Ole Miss Rebels football team represented the University of Mississippi during the 1908 college football season. Commenting on the game between Vanderbilt and Ole Miss which he officiated, Grantland Rice called captain Ike Knox, "a sensation in light hair, broad shoulders and stocky frame that gave both the Commodore offense and defense a shock that will not soon be forgotten." Rice continued: "Time and again, as a Commodore back would start down the field, the gorilla-like arms of the demon Knox would encircle his frame and said runner wasn’t only checked, but more often still, literally hurled yards towards his own goal line." In another article Rice wrote that only the mediocrity of his team kept Knox from being regionally and nationally famous: "If Knox has been upon a Vanderbilt, Sewanee or Auburn eleven he would more than likely have been hailed as one of the greatest halfbacks of the decade."
