1908 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1908 Prince Edward Island general election was held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on November 18, 1908. The election was won by the governing Liberals, led by incumbent Premier Francis Haszard. Haszard had taken over from his predecessor, Arthur Peters, following his death in January 1908. Haszard resigned as Premier in 1911 following appointment to the province's Supreme Court, and he was succeeded as Premier by H. James Palmer. Due to his designation as Premier, Palmer ran in a by-election in his district of 3rd Queens; traditionally, the Opposition does not run a candidate in these triggered by-elections, but the Conservatives did in the December, 1911 by-election and defeated Palmer in his own district. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. John Alexander Macdonald (Prince Edward Island Politician)
John Alexander MacDonald (October 21, 1838 – 1905) was a farmer and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 3rd Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1870 to 1900 as a Conservative member. He was born in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, the son of Angus McDonald. In 1875, he married Annie C. McKelvie. MacDonald was a justice of the peace in Indian River. He served as chairman of the board of railway appraisers and was a governor for Wales' College. He was speaker for the assembly from 1879 to 1891. MacDonald also served as a member of the Executive Council. His nephew Bernard Donald McLellan also served as speaker for the provincial assembly. Walter Augustus Ormsby Morson (December 24, 1851 – September 9, 1921) was a lawyer and political figure in Prince Edward Island, Canada. James D. McInnis (May 24, 1855 – August 20, 1917) was a farmer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. Robert Cox (Canadian Politician)
Robert N. Cox (October 12, 1850 – April 19, 1934) was a merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1908 to 1911 and from 1920 to 1923 as a Liberal. He was born in Charlottetown, the son of John Benjamin Cox, a native of Newfoundland. In 1885, he married Elizabeth Sutherland. He operated a general store in Morell for many years. Cox was also involved in lobster packing, fox ranching, potato starch manufacturing and farming. He served in the province's Executive Council as a minister without portfolio. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1912 and 1923. Cox died of a stroke at home in Charlottetown at the age of 83. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. Lauchlin MacDonald (March 25, 1844 – October 27, 1928) was a farmer and political figure in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He represented 1st Kings from 1875 to 1883 and from 1908 to 1912 in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Liberal member. He was born on the family farm at East Point, Kings County, Prince Edward Island, the son of Ronald Macdonald and Catherine Macdonald. He was educated at St. Dunstan's College. MacDonald was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1873. He was first elected to the provincial assembly in an 1875 by-election held after Emmanuel McEachern died. He was a vice-president of the Prince Edward Island Dairy Association, president of the Cheese Board of Trade of Prince Edward Island and president of the East Point Farmers' Institute.
