Italian Athletics Championships
The Italian Athletics Championships ( it, Campionati italiani assoluti di atletica leggera) are the national championships in athletics, organised every year by the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera. The first edition, four races only, was held in 1906 at Arena Civica in Milan, just after the foundation of the Federazione Podistica Italiana and with the organization of ''La Gazzetta dello Sport''. Since then, 110 editions were held with the only exceptions of the years 1915-1918 and 1944. During 1945, only athletes of Northern Italy could participate but FIDAL considered this edition as an official one. To the running races, in 1913 the field events were added. Umberto Barozzi (Ivrea, 13 August 1881 - 13 July 1929 ) was an Italian sprinter. Umberto Barozzi participated at one edition of the Summer Olympics (1908) and he won the first edition of the Italian Athletics Championships on 100 metres, in 1906. Emilio Lunghi
Emilio Lunghi (16 March 1887, in Genoa – 27 September 1925) was an Italian athlete. He won the silver medal in the men's 800 metres race at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, making him the first Italian to win an Olympic medal. Biography His time in the race was 1:54.2, which beat the previous Olympic record by 1.8 seconds but was still 1.4 seconds behind the time of Mel Sheppard, who took gold and set a new record at 1:52.8. Lunghi had won his semifinal heat with a time of 1:57.2 to advance to the final. Lunghi also competed in the 1500 metres. His first-round heat also included Norman Hallows; both of the two runners broke the Olympic record in that heat, but Hallows came out on top by running the race in 4:03.4 as opposed to Lunghi's 4:03.8. Pericle Pagliani (2 February 1883 - 4 October 1932) was an Italian long-distance runner who competed in the men's 5 miles and men's 3 miles team race at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography He was the most famous Italian podist in the early twentieth century, the idol of the youngest Dorando Pietri, who decided to seriously engage in racing competitions when he battled him in a racing competition that took place in 1904 in his Carpi hometown. Dorando Pietri
Dorando Pietri (; often wrongly spelt Petri; 16 October 1885 – 7 February 1942) was an Italian long-distance runner. He finished first in the marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London but was subsequently disqualified. Biography Early years Pietri was born in Mandrio, a ''frazione'' of Correggio, but spent his youth in Carpi (Emilia-Romagna region). Here he worked as a shop-boy at a confectionery shop. He was 1.59 m (5 ft., 2½ in.) tall. In September 1904 the most famous Italian runner of the time, Pericle Pagliani, took part in a race in Carpi. According to tradition, Pietri was attracted by the event and, still wearing his work clothes, ran to the finish ahead of Pagliani. A few days later Pietri débuted in a distance race, finishing second in the 3,000 m of Bologna. The following year he achieved his first international success, winning the 30 km in Paris. Umberto Blasi
Umberto Blasi (12 October 1886 - 1 July 1938) was an Italian long-distance runner who was a three-time national champion in the marathon and competed in the men's marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography On 3 June 1908 Blasi won Italy's first national marathon championship in Rome in a time of 3:01:04. Given that the race also served as the nation's Olympic trial for that year's Games, he earned a spot on the Italian Olympic team with Augusto Cocca and Dorando Pietri. The following month in London, Blasi was one of 56 who lined-up to start the marathon on a warm and muggy afternoon. He dropped out after 8 miles and did not finish. Blasi later won his second consecutive national championship with a 2:38:30 on a 40 kilometer course in Milan on 19 September 1909. Massimo Cartasegna (30 June 1885 – 15 April 1964) was an Italian athlete who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Biography He was born in Turin. The first event was the 1500 metres, in which Cartasegna did not finish his first round semifinal heat and did not advance to the final. In the 400 metres event, Cartasegna placed second in his preliminary heat with a time of 52.7 seconds, behind Louis Sebert's 50.2 seconds and did not advance to the semifinals. In the 3200 metre steeplechase competition he was eliminated in the first round. He was also a member of the Italian team which was eliminated in the first round of the 3 mile team race.
