1901 Virginia Orange And Blue Football Team
The 1901 Virginia Orange and Blue football team represented the University of Virginia as an independent during the 1901 college football season. Led by Westley Abbott in is first and only season as head coach, the team compiled a record of 8–2 and claims a Southern championship. Several Virginia players were selected All-Southern, including Christie Benet, later a United States senator for South Carolina, and Bradley Walker, later a Nashville attorney and prominent referee. The VMI–Virginia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute and the Hokies of Virginia Tech (formerly known as the Virginia Polytechnic Institute "Fighting Gobblers"). The teams first played in 1894 and last played in 1984. They are scheduled to meet again in 2026, after a 42-year hiatus. The two schools are only about 80 miles apart in western Virginia and were in the same conference (the Southern Conference) from 1924 to 1964.
