1900 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1900 Prince Edward Island general election was held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on December 12, 1900. The election was won by the governing Liberals, led by incumbent Premier Donald Farquharson. Farquharson would later give up his office in 1901 to run successfully for federal office. He was succeeded by Arthur Peters, who previously served as the province's Attorney General. The opposition Conservatives, led by Daniel Gordon, lost two seats. This was Gordon's final election before stepping down as Conservative leader in 1903 - he was succeeded by John A. Murdock MacKinnon
Murdoch MacKinnon (March 15, 1865 – October 12, 1944) was a Canadian politician and served as the 11th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. MacKinnon was born in Brooklyn, Prince Edward Island to parents of Scottish descent, Lauchlin MacKinnon and Mary MacDonald. He received his higher education from Prince of Wales College and then became a farmer. On October 21, 1914, he married Perle Beecher Taylor, and together they had one son. Malcolm MacDonald (Canadian Politician)
Malcolm MacDonald (July 10, 1836 – September 23, 1902) was a merchant, ship owner, shipbuilder and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 3rd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1900 to 1902 as a Liberal. He was born in Uigg, Prince Edward Island, the son of Donald MacDonald and Margaret Gordon, and was educated there. He married Grace Snelgrave in 1872. MacDonald established a shipbuilding and trading firm at Montague Bridge in partnership with Lewis Westaway. He was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1882, 1893 and 1897. He served as a minister without portfolio in the province's Executive Council. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province.
