John Rutherford Blair
John Rutherfurd Blair (8 February 1843 – 25 November 1914) was the Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand from 1898 to 1899. Biography Blair was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and was a paper merchant. His career started with a large Glasgow paper merchant firm. In 1860 he migrated to Melbourne, Australia, where he was appointed in charge of the printers Sands and McDougall. In Melbourne he met and married Jean Cowan of Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1869. That same year they moved to Wellington where Blair was to be Sands and McDougall's representative, and he remained there for the rest of his life, living first in Vivian Street, and later on The Terrace. In Wellington he entered into partnership with bookseller William Lyon, opening a premises called Lyon and Blair on Lambton Quay in 1874. Edward Bowes Cargill (9 October 1823 – 9 August 1903) was a 19th-century businessman and Member of Parliament in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. He was the Mayor of Dunedin from 1897 to 1898. Early life Cargill was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1823; he was the seventh son of William Cargill, one of Otago's most prominent settlers. John Cargill was an elder brother. Edward Cargill was educated in Edinburgh and, after the family moved to England, at Norwich Grammar School and at Perone's School. He went to sea from age 14 and visited Australia and the Far East. In 1844, he settled in Ceylon and worked for the Bank of Western India. He was then a merchant in Ceylon and was in various partnerships. Charles Louisson
Charles Melville Louisson (1840 – 19 April 1924), known as Charles Louisson or Chas Louisson, was a New Zealand politician. Born in London, and relocated to Australia as a teenager, he worked in farming and on the gold fields. He moved to Christchurch to join his brother Alfred (b. 1832) in business, which they conducted in transport, as merchants and farmers in various places in the South Island. Back in Christchurch, they were joined by their brother Cecil (b. 1837) and bought a brewery, which under their stewardship became very successful. With financial security behind him, Louisson first became a councillor for Christchurch City Council for six years (1881–1887) before being elected Mayor of Christchurch (1887–1889 and 1897–1899). In all of his two elections as councillor, and four elections as mayor, he was returned unopposed. Walter Cooper (mayor)
Walter Henry Cooper ( 1845 – 17 April 1941) was Mayor of Christchurch in 1895, and again in 1897. Born in Somerset, he came to New Zealand early in his life via Australia. A butcher by trade, he later worked in trade and export. He was for many years a member of Christchurch City Council. After his wife died, he lived with his daughter in Victoria, Australia. Early life Cooper was born in Somerset in circa 1845. He emigrated to Australia in 1852 and shortly after that went to New Zealand. Professional life In Christchurch, he joined the firm of Messrs Hopkins and Co., butchers, as their manager. Three years later, he left Hopkins and Co, and bought the business from an estate. He worked in wholesale and export trade until he retired in 1893.
