1898 Clemson Tigers Football Team
The 1898 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson Agricultural College—now known as Clemson University–during the 1898 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. The Tigers completed their third season as an independent with a record of 3–1, with wins over Bingham Military School, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech, and a loss to Georgia. For the first time, Clemson played a game at home, on October 20 against Bingham Military School, and a neutral site game at Augusta, Georgia against Georgia Tech. John Penton served as the team's coach for his first season while Shack Shealy was the captain. Clemson–Georgia Tech Football Rivalry
The Clemson–Georgia Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Clemson Tigers football team of Clemson University and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team of Georgia Tech. Both schools are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Bingham Military School was the state of North Carolina's first military school, founded in 1826 by Capt. D.H. Bingham, with the intention of providing more accessible training for military officers. The school opened its doors in January 1827, with D.H. Bingham as its superintendent and Capt. Patridge, who had served in the French army, as its head instructor. The school relocated twice, first from Williamsborough to Littleton in 1829, and then later that year from Littleton to Oxford. The school initially opened to some popularity. However, it soon came under fire by the newspaper ''The Star'' due to its young educators and the frequent absence of Capt. John Penton
John Abner Penton (February 10, 1870 – October 17, 1919) was an American football player and coach. Penton attended the University of Virginia, Auburn University, and Johns Hopkins Medical School. He played starting guard on the 1893, 1894, and 1895 Virginia football teams and was captain of the 1893, 1894, and 1895 teams.e. g. Clemson–Georgia Football Rivalry
The Clemson–Georgia football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Clemson Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs. It was for many years a spirited "border" rivalry between the two schools that are separated by a mere 70 miles. They met annually from 1897 to 1916, and again from 1962 to 1987 (aside from 1966 and 1972).
