Bill Wertenbaker
William C. Wertenbaker (September 15, 1875 – March 24, 1933) was an American football coach and physician. He served as the head football coach at Wofford College (1895), the University of Richmond (1897), the University of South Carolina (1898), and Washington and Lee University (1900, 1902), compiling a career college football record of 11–16. Wertenbaker practiced medicine in New Castle and Wilmington, Delaware, specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology. Wertenbaker was born on September 15, 1875, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He died on March 24, 1933, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland following a brief illness. 1898 Clemson Tigers Football Team
The 1898 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson Agricultural College—now known as Clemson University–during the 1898 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. The Tigers completed their third season as an independent with a record of 3–1, with wins over Bingham Military School, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech, and a loss to Georgia. For the first time, Clemson played a game at home, on October 20 against Bingham Military School, and a neutral site game at Augusta, Georgia against Georgia Tech. Latta Park Baseball Field
The Latta Park Baseball Field was a ballpark located in Latta Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its capacity was approximately 1,000 for baseball. Edward Dilworth Latta, Mayor F. B. McDowell, and others formed the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company (the "Four Cs") in 1890 to develop the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte. To attract visitors and residents, the Four Cs constructed an electric trolley route at the end of which they built a recreational area called Latta Park with gardens, walking paths, a lake, and playing fields including the Latta Park Baseball Field. The first game was played at the park's grand opening on May 20, 1891 with a game between teams from Winston, North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina. South Carolina Gamecocks Football Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the South Carolina Gamecocks football team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Since the team's creation in 1892, the Gamecocks have participated in 1,078 officially sanctioned games, including 17 bowl games. The Gamecocks have been a member of several athletic conferences. From 1892 to 1932, South Carolina competed as a football independent. From 1933 through 1952, the Gamecocks were part of the Southern Conference. In 1953, South Carolina became one of the original members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, where it remained through 1970. The Gamecocks competed as an independent again from 1971 to 1991. In 1992, South Carolina joined the Southeastern Conference's East Division, where it won a division title in 2010.
