Nya Smedjegården
''Smedjegården'' (literally: "Blacksmiths' Yard"), initially ''Nya smedje gården'' ("New Blacksmiths' Yard"), was a prison in Stockholm, in use between 1636 and 1896. The name was derived from a prison, similarly known as '' Smedjegården,'' in the dungeons of the royal castle '' Tre Kronor,'' in use until the castle was destroyed by fire in 1697. There the prisoners were made to labor in the castle's smithy. The ''Nya smedjegården'' was founded in 1636 at the street Drottninggatan in Stockholm. From 1664 onward, it was the site for prisoners awaiting death penalty in Stockholm. The building housed also a house of correction, an infamous torture chamber ''(Rosenkammaren),'' until the abolition of torture in 1772, and an orphanage ''( Allmänna Barnhuset)'' until 1886. Hanna Mathilda Winge, née Tengelin (4 December 1838 – 9 March 1896) was a Swedish painter and textile artist. She was one of the five founders of the Swedish women's association Nya Idun. Biography Hanna Mathilda Winge was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She was the daughter of blacksmith Johan Thimotheus Tengelin and Anna Maria Hultman, and married the artist Mårten Eskil Winge (1825–1896) in 1867. Winge was a student at J. J. Ringdahls målarskola (J. J. Ringdahl Art School) in Stockholm in 1859, and at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1864–1867, and the student of Johan Christoffer Boklund (1817–1880). Together with Sophie Adlersparre (1823–1895) and Molly Rohtlieb (1836–1914), Winge was the co-founder of the association Friends of Handicraft (''Handarbetets vänner'') which was founded in 1874 with the purpose of the development and refinement of Swedish textile art. Anna Jönsdotter (c. 1820–1896), known as Kloka Anna i Vallåkra (Wise Anna of Vallåkra) or Vallåkraflickan (The Vallåkra Girl), was a Swedish cunning woman and natural healer. She was widely known and aroused considerable attention by her contemporaries through her alleged divine visions and her ability to heal the sick. Baron Louis Gerard De Geer af Finspång (18 July 181824 September 1896) was a Swedish statesman and writer. He was born at Finspång Castle in Risinge parish. He was a lawyer, and in 1855 became president of the Göta hovrätt, or lord justice for the appellate court of Götaland. From 7 April 1858 to 3 June 1870 he was Prime Minister for Justice and again from 11 May 1875 to 20 March 1876. As a member of the nobility, he took part in the Swedish Riksdag of the Estates from 1851 onwards. From 1867 to 1878 he was the member for Stockholm in the first chamber in the New Riksdag, where he introduced and passed many useful reforms. Architect of the New Riksdag De Geer's greatest political achievement was the reform of the Swedish representative system. Emmy Carolina Rappe (14 February 1835 – 19 October 1896) was a Swedish nurse and principal for a nursing school. She was the pioneer and founder of the Swedish nursing education. She was the first trained professional nurse and the first principal of the first nursing education in her country. Life Rappe was born to landowner Baron Adolf Fredrik Rappe and Ulrika Catharina Wilhelmina Hammarskjöld. She was given a strict education where a sense of duty and a sensible economy was regarded as important, and being an unmarried noblewoman, she stayed under the supervision of her family until the age of thirty. She had an early interest in medicine and nursing. She was reportedly inspired by her aunt Elisabeth "Elise" Rappe.
