Fencing At The 1896 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre was one of three fencing events on the Fencing at the 1896 Summer Olympics programme. It was held on 9 April, the fourth day of competition. The event was won by Ioannis Georgiadis of Greece, with his countryman Telemachos Karakalos. Holger Nielsen of Denmark finished third. Background This was the first appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The five competitors were the Greeks Telemachos Karakalos, Ioannis Georgiadis, and Georgios Iatridis; the Dane Holger Nielsen; and the Austrian Adolf Schmal. The favorite was Schmal. Competition format The event featured a pool-play final. Each bout was to three touches. Sabre rules were used, except that the target area was the entire body (rather than being limited to above the waist). Johannes Theodor Suhr
Johannes Theodor Suhr, OSB (24 January 1896 in Nyborg – 10 March 1997) was a Danish Roman Catholic bishop and the second Danish Roman Catholic bishop since the Reformation. Early life and conversion to Roman Catholicism Johannes Theodor Suhr was the son of landowner Carl Emil Suhr (1861–1928) and his wife Laura Marie Miller (1859–1919), graduating from Odense Cathedral School in 1913. After that, he was an agricultural student and emigrated after World War I to Argentina where he was a farmer. Some years later Suhr went back to Denmark, where he became increasingly preoccupied with life's basic questions. During a visit to Rome in 1925, Suhr was intrigued by Catholicism, and on 17 January 1926 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church. Then Suhr traveled to Benedictine Monastery of Clervaux in Luxembourg and entered in the Benedictine Order later in the same year. Eyvind Johan-Svendsen (5 January 1896 – 10 October 1946) was a Danish stage and film actor. Biography He worked in Danish theatre between 1917 and 1939 and appeared at the Det Kongelige Teater (the Royal Danish Theatre) in Copenhagen from 1926 to 1939. He starred in his first film, the religious film ''Præsten i Vejlby'', in 1931.
