Alva Adams (governor)
Alva Adams (May 14, 1850 β November 1, 1922) was an American politician. Early life Adams was born in Adamsville, Wisconsin on May 14, 1850. He was son of John Adams and Eliza Blanchard. His father, was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate. Adams was educated in the public schools of Wisconsin, and in 1871 went to Colorado. Career Adams was a member of the first Colorado legislature in 1876. He served four years and two months as the fifth, tenth and 14th Governor of Colorado from 1887 to 1889, 1897 to 1899, and briefly in 1905. His last tenure as Governor lasted a little over two months. He and previous Governor James Peabody each declared the other an illegitimate Governor, even though both were involved in illegal electoral practices. Eventually the Republican legislature removed Adams, installed Peabody, who immediately abdicated for his Lt. Governor Jesse Fuller McDonald, and the issue ended. Morton Shelley Bailey (July 3, 1855 β March 16, 1922) was an American politician who served in the Colorado Senate from the 14th district from 1891 to 1893 and as an Associate Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court from 1909 to 1922.D. Albert Wills McIntire (January 15, 1853 β January 31, 1935) was an American Republican politician. He was the ninth Governor of Colorado from 1895 to 1897. In 1896 Governor McIntire sent the Colorado National Guard to Leadville due to violence at the Coronado Mine during a strike by the Western Federation of Miners. Early in 1896, McIntire rejected a last-minute insanity defense appeal of the Park County rancher Benjamin Ratcliff, who murdered three members of his local school board with whom he had quarreled over the education of this three children. After McIntire refused to intervene, Ratcliff was hanged at the Colorado State Penitentiary at CaΓ±on City. United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1896, in 32 states, concurrent with the House, Senate elections and presidential election, on November 3, 1896 (except in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont, which held early elections). Following the death of Delaware Governor Joshua H. Marvil, the General Assembly scheduled the next gubernatorial election for 1896, two years into the term.
