Alva Adams (governor)
Alva Adams (May 14, 1850 – November 1, 1922) was an American politician. Early life Adams was born in Adamsville, Wisconsin on May 14, 1850. He was son of John Adams and Eliza Blanchard. His father, was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate. Adams was educated in the public schools of Wisconsin, and in 1871 went to Colorado. Career Adams was a member of the first Colorado legislature in 1876. He served four years and two months as the fifth, tenth and 14th Governor of Colorado from 1887 to 1889, 1897 to 1899, and briefly in 1905. His last tenure as Governor lasted a little over two months. He and previous Governor James Peabody each declared the other an illegitimate Governor, even though both were involved in illegal electoral practices. Eventually the Republican legislature removed Adams, installed Peabody, who immediately abdicated for his Lt. Governor Jesse Fuller McDonald, and the issue ended. Arthur Cornforth
Arthur Cornforth (February 21, 1861 – August 5, 1938) was the 13th Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, serving from January to March 1905 under Alva Adams, then March to July 1905 under Jesse F. McDonald. Cornforth was born in Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Colorado State Senate from 1903 to 1905 and again from 1911 to 1915. James Benton Grant
James Benton Grant (January 2, 1848 – November 1, 1911) was an American mining engineer, Confederate soldier, and the third Governor of Colorado from 1883 to 1885. He was born in Russell County, Alabama and died in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. During the outbreak of the American Civil War, he enlisted as a private in the 20th Alabama Light Artillery regiment in the Confederate Army. He attended what is now Iowa State University for two years and then Cornell University from 1873–1874 before he moved to the Freiberg School of Mines in Germany, where he studied metallurgy. He was also the first Democratic governor of Colorado. Alva Blanchard Adams
Alva Blanchard Adams (October 29, 1875 – December 1, 1941) was a Democratic politician who represented Colorado in the United States Senate from 1923 until 1924 and again from 1933 to 1941. Biography Adams was born in Del Norte, Colorado and graduated from Phillips Academy in 1893, Yale University in 1896, and Columbia Law School in 1899. He became a county attorney in Pueblo County, Colorado in 1909, a regent of the State University of Colorado in 1911, and Pueblo city attorney in 1911. During World War I, Adams served as a major in the Judge Advocate General's department in 1918 and 1919. In 1923, he was appointed to fill the vacancy in the United States Senate caused by the death of Samuel D. Nicholson. Adams's appointment made him the first U.S. Senator from Colorado to have been born in the state. William Herbert Adams (February 15, 1861 – February 4, 1954), better known as Billy Adams, was an American political figure who served as the 25th governor of the state of Colorado, from 1927 until 1933. Biography Adams was born in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. In 1878, when he was 17, Adams moved to Alamosa, Colorado. He was later elected to City Treasurer, then Mayor of Alamosa, and later as Conejos County commissioner. In 1886, he was elected to the Colorado General Assembly as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives. In 1888, he was elected to the Colorado Senate where he served until 1926, when he was elected as Governor of Colorado. Alva is a city in and the county seat of Woods County, Oklahoma, United States, along the Salt Fork Arkansas River. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census. Northwestern Oklahoma State University is located in Alva. History Alva was established in 1893 as a General Land Office for the Cherokee Outlet land run, the largest of the land rushes that settled western and central Oklahoma. The site was chosen for its location on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and likely named for a railroad attorney, Alva Adams, who had become governor of Colorado. Jesse Fuller McDonald
Jesse Fuller McDonald (June 30, 1858February 25, 1942) was an American public official, civil engineer and surveyor, who served as the 16th governor of Colorado in 1905–07. Biography McDonald was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on June 30, 1858. After completing his education in Ohio's public school system, he studied civil engineering and surveying. He moved to Leadville, Colorado, in 1879, and started his career in mining. Five years later, he formed a partnership with George M. Robinson, and became the owner of several lucrative mines, including the Harvard, Penrose and El Dorado. McDonald entered politics as mayor of Leadville, a position he held from 1899 to 1905.
