1895 Minor Counties Championship
The 1895 Minor Counties Championship was the first running of the Minor Counties Cricket Championship, and ran from 3 June to 29 August 1895. The inaugural title was shared between three counties—Durham, Norfolk and Worcestershire—as they finished level on three points apiece. The leading run-scorer was Thomas Pointon, playing for Cheshire, whose score of 110 against Durham was one of only six centuries scored over the course of the season. The leading wicket-taker, Oxfordshire's Peter Rogers, took three ten wicket match hauls. Bowling Average
In cricket, a player's bowling average is the number of runs they have conceded per wicket taken. The lower the bowling average is, the better the bowler is performing. It is one of a number of statistics used to compare bowlers, commonly used alongside the economy rate and the strike rate to judge the overall performance of a bowler. When a bowler has taken only a small number of wickets, their bowling average can be artificially high or low, and unstable, with further wickets taken or runs conceded resulting in large changes to their bowling average. Due to this, qualification restrictions are generally applied when determining which players have the best bowling averages. James Welford
James William Welford (27 March 1869 – 17 January 1945) was an English cricketer and footballer. He won both the Football League (three times) and FA Cup with Aston Villa, and the Scottish Football League and Scottish Cup with Celtic, all in a seven-year period in the 1890s. In cricket, Welford was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. Football Welford was born in Barnard Castle, County Durham; his playing position was as a full-back. He had played locally for Stockton and Bishop Auckland before joining Birmingham St George's, from where he joined Aston Villa in 1893. He played there until 1897, making a total of 83 appearances in both League and Cup, scoring one goal. Batting Average (cricket)
In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out, usually given to two decimal places. Since the number of runs a player scores and how often they get out are primarily measures of their own playing ability, and largely independent of their teammates, batting average is a good metric for an individual player's skill as a batter (although the practice of drawing comparisons between players on this basis is not without criticism). The number is also simple to interpret intuitively. If all the batter's innings were completed (i.e. they were out every innings), this is the average number of runs they score per innings. It represents the historic county of Cambridgeshire including the Isle of Ely. The original Cambridgeshire club, established in 1844, is classified as a first-class team from 1857 to 1871. The present club, founded in 1891, has always had minor status although it has played List A matches occasionally from 1964 until 2004 but is not classified as a List A team ''per se''.
