James Welford
James William Welford (27 March 1869 – 17 January 1945) was an English cricketer and footballer. He won both the Football League (three times) and FA Cup with Aston Villa, and the Scottish Football League and Scottish Cup with Celtic, all in a seven-year period in the 1890s. In cricket, Welford was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. Football Welford was born in Barnard Castle, County Durham; his playing position was as a full-back. He had played locally for Stockton and Bishop Auckland before joining Birmingham St George's, from where he joined Aston Villa in 1893. He played there until 1897, making a total of 83 appearances in both League and Cup, scoring one goal. While at Villa (where his teammates included Bob Chatt, also from Barnard Castle), he won the FA Cup in 1895 and claimed three Football League titles in 1893–94, 1895–96 and 1896–97, although by the latter season he was no longer a regular, possibly due to injury – coincidental ... Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle (, ) is a market town on the north bank of the River Tees, in County Durham, Northern England. The town is named after and built around a medieval castle ruin. In cricket, batting is the act or skill of hitting the ball with a bat to score runs and prevent the loss of one's wicket. John Campbell (19 August 1872 – 2 December 1947) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Celtic, Aston Villa, Third Lanark and the Scotland national team. Albert Evans (footballer, Born 1874)
Albert James Evans (18 March 1874 – 24 March 1966) was an English professional football left back who made over 170 appearances in the Football League for Aston Villa. After his retirement as a player he managed Coventry City and coached Aston Villa and Sarpsborg FK. Career Player Following a spell at his hometown team, non-league Barnard Castle, Evans was signed for Aston Villa by secretary George Ramsay on the advice of player Bob Chatt (also from Barnard Castle) in August 1896. He soon took the place of James Welford – coincidentally another Barnard Castle man –and played a total of 206 games for Villa, achieving major success as the club won three Football League championships in his time, including a 'double' with the FA Cup in 1896–97. The 1895 FA Cup Final was contested by Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion at Crystal Palace. Aston Villa won 1–0, with Bob Chatt being credited with scoring the fastest goal in FA Cup Final history, scored after just 30 seconds. This record would stand for 114 years before being broken by Louis Saha of Everton in the 2009 FA Cup Final with a goal after 25 seconds.
