1891 British Lions Tour To South Africa
The 1891 British Isles tour to South Africa was the first British Isles rugby union tour of South Africa and only the second overseas tour conducted by a joint British team. Between 9 July and 7 September, the team played 20 games, including three Tests against the South Africa national rugby union team. The British Isles not only won all three Test matches, but also won all 17 provincial games. Although not named as such at the time, the tour is retrospectively recognised as a British Lions tour. Tour details After the South African Rugby Board was formed in 1889, the committee decided one of the best ways to promote the game was to invite a British side to visit, similar to the British Isles tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Bill Maclagan
William Edward Maclagan (5 April 1858 – 10 October 1926) was a Scottish international rugby union forward who played club rugby for London Scottish F.C. Maclagan was one of the longest-serving international rugby players during the early development of the sport, and was awarded 25 caps for Scotland. He played international rugby for thirteen seasons, a Scottish record for sixty years,Griffiths (1987), pg 2:7. and led the first official British Isles team on its 1891 tour of South Africa. Maclagan's contributions to the early development of rugby were recognised in 2009 with his induction into the IRB Hall of Fame. William Grant Mitchell
William Grant Mitchell (23 May 1865 – 14 January 1904) was an English rugby union fullback who was a member of the first official British Isles team. Mitchell represented several club teams and was an original member of touring team, the Barbarians. Rugby career Mitchell was educated at Bromsgrove School before gaining entry to Caius College, Cambridge in 1884. Mitchell played for Cambridge University, and in 1886 won a sporting Blue when he played in The Varsity Match. In 1890, Mitchell, now playing for Richmond was selected to represent England as part of the 1890 Home Nations Championship. England had just returned to international rugby after two years in exile after refusing to join the International Rugby Board, but began badly losing to Wales, which was the first Welsh victory over the English. Froude Hancock
Philip Froude Hancock universally known as Froude Hancock (29 August 1865 – 16 October 1933) was an English rugby union forward who played international rugby for the British Isles XV on two tours, the 1891 and 1896 tour of South Africa. Origins Hancock was born in 1865 at Wellington, Somerset, one of the ten sons of William Hancock of Wiveliscombe, Somerset, a notable brewer. One of his elder close female relatives was Mary Ann Hancock (eldest daughter of an earlier William Hancock of Wiveliscombe), who in 1827 married John Prestwood Bellew (born 1803), nephew and eventual heir of Rev. Johnny Hammond (rugby Player)
John Hammond (28 July 1860 – 21 November 1907) was an England, English rugby union forward who, although not capped for England national rugby union team, England, was part of three British and Irish Lions, British Lions tours, all to South Africa. William Bromet
William Ernest Bromet (17 May 1868 – 23 January 1949) was an English rugby union forward who played club rugby for Oxford University and Tadcaster and county rugby for Yorkshire. Bromet and was a member of the first official British Isles tour in 1891 and represented England on twelve occasions between 1891 and 1896. Bromet was a part of the 1892 Triple Crown winning team for England. Personal history Bromet was born in Tadcaster, Yorkshire in 1868 to John Addinell Bromet, a solicitor, and Elizabeth Smith. Bromet was the youngest of seven children and was educated first at Richmond Grammar School,Marshall (1951), pg 246. before matriculating to Wadham College, Oxford. William Wotherspoon (rugby Player)
William Wotherspoon (2 May 1868 – 19 August 1942) was a Scottish rugby union half-back who was a member of the first official British Isles tour and was also capped for the Scotland team. Wotherspoon played one game in the 1891 Championship, which saw Scotland win all three matches making Wotherspoon a Triple Crown winning player. Personal history Wotherspoon was born in Aberdour, Fife in 1868 to Charles Grey Wotherspoon, a barrister of Aberdour. Wotherspoon was educated at Loretto School before being accepted into Clare College, Cambridge in 1887, gaining a BA in 1891. He came back to Fife to play cricket for Burntisland, with his brother. A sometimes Assistant Master of Blairlodge School in Stirlingshire (which is today a Young Offenders Institute), Wotherspoon became a barrister for Nobel's explosive factory in London. Blackheath FC
Blackheath Football Club is a rugby union club based in Well Hall, Eltham in south-east London. The club was founded in Blackheath in 1858, and is the fourth-oldest rugby club in continuous existence in the world, after Dublin University Football Club (1854), Liverpool St Helens F.C. (1857) and Edinburgh Academical Football Club (1857). Howard Marshall (rugby Player)
Howard Marshall OBE (20 December 1870 – 9 October 1929) was an English rugby union half-back who played club rugby for Blackheath and Richmond and was a member of the first official British Isles tour in 1891. Marshall played just one game for England, scoring a hat-trick of tries on his debut. Personal life Marshall was born in Sunderland in 1870 to John Ferrow Marshall, a ship-owner. He was educated at several schools, including Barnard Castle and Norfolk County, before gaining entry into Caius College, Cambridge in 1888. Although Marshall would later have a notable rugby career, he did not win a sporting Blue while at Cambridge. Marshall first entered medicine when he joined the medical college, St. Bartholomew's, becoming a House Surgeon and the Clinical Assistant in the Throat Department. London Scottish Football Club is a rugby union club in England. The club is a member of both the Rugby Football Union and the Scottish Rugby Union. The Oxford University Rugby Football Club (Oxford University RFC or OURFC) is the rugby union club of the University of Oxford. The club contests The Varsity Match every year against Cambridge University at Twickenham. History Men's team The University of Oxford RFC was founded in 1869, fifteen months before the creation of the Rugby Football Union. The first Varsity Match was played in February 1872 in Oxford at 'The Parks', the following year the return game was played in Cambridge on Parker's Piece. Paul Robert Clauss
Paul Robert Clauss (22 June 1868 – 21 April 1945) was a German-born rugby union three-quarter who played club rugby for Oxford and Birkenhead Park. Clauss was a member of the first official British Isles tour in 1891 and also represented Scotland on six occasions. He was part of two Triple Crown winning teams for Scotland, and made an impressive international start in the 1891 Championship, scoring in all three Scotland games.
