William Rush Merriam
William Rush Merriam (July 26, 1849February 18, 1931) was an American politician and banker. A Republican Party (United States), Republican, he served as the eighth Governor of Minnesota from 1889 to 1893. Life and career Merriam was born in Wadham's Mills, New York, the son of Mahala Kimpton (Delano) and Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Minnesota House Speaker John L. Merriam. He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1883 and 1887 and was the Speaker of the House in 1887. Thomas Wilson (May 16, 1827 – April 3, 1910) was an American lawyer, Minnesota congressman and state legislator, associate justice and the second chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The Farmers' Alliance was an organized agrarian economic movement among American farmers that developed and flourished ca. 1875. The movement included several parallel but independent political organizations — the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union among the white farmers of the South, the National Farmers' Alliance among the white and black farmers of the Midwest and High Plains, where the Granger movement had been strong, and the Colored Farmers' National Alliance and Cooperative Union, consisting of the African American farmers of the South. United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1890, in 27 states, concurrent with the House and Senate elections, on November 4, 1890 (except in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wyoming, which held early elections). In New Hampshire, the newly elected Governor's term began in the January following the election for the first time, rather than in the following June as previously.
