1888–89 Aston Villa F.C. Season
The 1888–89 English football season saw the first season of the Football League. In the late 1880s, Birmingham and the surrounding region boasted many of the country's strongest football teams. Villa and several of the region's leading clubs joined the first two national leagues set up in England, the Football League and the Football Alliance. Aston Villa were one of the new league's 12 founding members and finished as runners-up behind double winners Preston North End. The 'Invincibles' from Lancashire also ended Villa's bid to win every single home game, with a 2–0 win at Wellington Road in Villa's last home fixture. Villa's cup season ended with an 8–1 defeat by Blackburn Rovers that remained a club record until 2012. Local businessman, George Kynoch was appointed president of the club in 1888. Aston Villa F
Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. George Kynoch (businessman)
George Kynoch (22 August 1834 – 28 February 1891) was the founder of IMI plc, one of the United Kingdom's largest engineering businesses. Biography George Kynoch was born at Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and educated at the local school. He first worked as an insurance clerk in Glasgow and then as a bank clerk in Worcester. After working for a while at larger bank branch in Birmingham, in 1856 he decided to join Pursall & Phillips, percussion cap manufacturers, in Birmingham. An explosion in 1859 destroyed the works, killing 19 of the 70 employees. As a result the firm moved to on four acres of land at Witton in 1862. In 1863, Kynoch took over the business, which was subsequently renamed G. Kynoch and Co. The ''Lion Works'', as it became known, quickly secured contracts to supply ammunition to the British and Turkish Governments. Accrington is a town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, England. It lies about east of Blackburn, west of Burnley, east of Preston, north of Manchester and is situated on the culverted River Hyndburn. Bolton (, locally ) is a large town in Greater Manchester in North West England, formerly a part of Lancashire. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish people, Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. Archie Goodall
Archibald Lee Goodall (3 January 1865 – 20 November 1929) was an Irish footballer who made 429 appearances in the Football League for Preston North End, Aston Villa, Derby County, Glossop and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He won 10 caps at full international level for Ireland. Goodall could play in the centre half and forward positions. Goodall made 424 appearances and scored 52 goals (Football League & FA Cup) for Derby County. He also served as club captain and established a club record for consecutive league appearances. Goodall was employed regularly as a centre half and made great use of the shoulder charge. His stamina and shear physical presence also made him very effective in this position. Dennis Hodgetts
Dennis Hodgetts (28 November 1863 – 25/26 March 1945), commonly known as Denny Hodgetts, was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England. Signed as a Youth player for Mitchell St George's in 1878 and played for three years. When 17 he signed for Great Lever for the 1881-82 season. In 1882 he returned to Mitchell St. George's F.C. where he stayed for four years. Hodgetts signed for Aston Villa in February 1886. The following year he scored the first goal in Aston Villa's first FA Cup final triumph. In 1895 he collected another FA Cup winners medal with Villa. Archibald Hunter (23 September 1859 – 29 November 1894) was a Scottish Association football, footballer who was the first captain of Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa to lift the FA Cup, in 1887 FA Cup Final, 1887. Playing career Albert Alfred Brown (7 January 1862 – 1930), Brown was a footballer in the early years of English professional football, who played for Aston Villa from 1884 until 1894. Albert and his brother Alfred played in the same forward line during the 1884-1885 and 1885 - 1886 seasons. He was in the Villa team which won the FA Cup in 1887, beating local rivals West Bromwich Albion in the final. Before playing for Villa he played for Mitchell St George's. Arthur Albert Dixon (July 1867 – 1933) was a footballer who played in the Football League for Aston Villa and Stoke. Career Dixon was born in Matlock and played for Derby Midland before joining Aston Villa in August 1888. Dixon made his debut on 15 September 1888 at Wellington Road, at wing-half, in a match against Stoke which Aston Villa won 5–1. Thomas Walter Green (August 1863 – 2 October 1923) was an English footballer, known for scoring Aston Villa's first goal in the Football League.
