1888 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Football Team
The 1888 Wake Forest Baptists football team was an American football team that represented Wake Forest College during the 1888 college football season. In its first year of intercollegiate football, the team defeated North Carolina by a 6–4 score in a game played on October 18, 1888, at the State Fair Grounds in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the game, ''The News & Observer'' wrote:"Decidedly one of the most interesting features of the whole fair was the game of foot ball yesterday between Wake Forest and Chapel Hill, resulting in a victory for Wake Forest. The game was exciting and was played by excellent teams on both sides. It was witnessed by a tremendous crowd. The players were uniformed and were a skilled and active set of boys." W. C. Wake Forest University
Wake Forest University is a private research university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 1888 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Yale as having been selected national champions. October 18 saw the first intercollegiate game in the state of North Carolina when Wake Forest defeated North Carolina 6–4. 1888 North Carolina Tar Heels Football Team
The 1888 North Carolina Tar Heels football team represented the University of North Carolina in the 1888 college football season. They played four games with a final record of 1–3. This was the first season the university fielded a football team. The team captains for the 1888 season were Bob Bingham and Steve Bragaw. The game against Wake Forest College was the first in the state, and the game against Trinity College the first "scientific" game in the state. Either is the first intercollegiate game in North Carolina. Princeton star Hector Cowan traveled south at the beginning of 1889 and trained the team for 10-days and was paid $300 the student body collected for that purpose. After the November 29 contest with Trinity the two schools, along with Wake Forest College, formed the North Carolina Inter-Collegiate Football Association. The North Carolina Tar Heels football team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the sport of American football or Gridiron Football. This is a list of seasons completed by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team. Representing Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Demon Deacons are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the NCAA Division I FBS. They play their home games out of Truist Field, and are currently led by head coach Dave Clawson. The Demon Deacons began playing football in 1888, competing as an independent for several decades until joining the Southern Conference in 1936. After 17 years in the SoCon, the Deacons joined the ACC as a charter member in 1953, and have competed in the league ever since.
