1888 North Carolina Tar Heels Football Team
The 1888 North Carolina Tar Heels football team represented the University of North Carolina in the 1888 college football season. They played four games with a final record of 1–3. This was the first season the university fielded a football team. The team captains for the 1888 season were Bob Bingham and Steve Bragaw. The game against Wake Forest College was the first in the state, and the game against Trinity College the first "scientific" game in the state. Either is the first intercollegiate game in North Carolina. Princeton star Hector Cowan traveled south at the beginning of 1889 and trained the team for 10-days and was paid $300 the student body collected for that purpose. After the November 29 contest with Trinity the two schools, along with Wake Forest College, formed the North Carolina Inter-Collegiate Football Association. Hector Cowan
Hector William "Hec" Cowan (July 12, 1863 – October 19, 1941) was an American football player and coach, and an ordained Presbyterian minister. He played college football at Princeton University from 1885 to 1889. He was team captain for Princeton and selected to the first College Football All-America Team in 1889. Cowan served as the head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for two games during the 1888 season and at the University of Kansas from 1894 to 1896, compiling a career coaching record of 18–8–1. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1951. Playing career Cowan played football for the Princeton Tigers from 1885 to 1889. The 1888 Wake Forest Baptists football team was an American football team that represented Wake Forest College during the 1888 college football season. In its first year of intercollegiate football, the team defeated North Carolina by a 6–4 score in a game played on October 18, 1888, at the State Fair Grounds in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the game, ''The News & Observer'' wrote:"Decidedly one of the most interesting features of the whole fair was the game of foot ball yesterday between Wake Forest and Chapel Hill, resulting in a victory for Wake Forest. Victory Bell (Duke–North Carolina)
The Victory Bell is the traveling trophy given to the winner of the annual football game between the Duke University Blue Devils and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. The game was worth two points in the now-defunct, yearlong Carlyle Cup between the two schools.
