1888 FA Cup Final
The 1888 FA Cup Final was contested by West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End at the Kennington Oval. Preston were strong favourites for the Cup, having set a record which still stands today by beating Hyde 26–0 in the first round, and were so confident of overcoming West Bromwich Albion in the final that they asked to be photographed with the trophy before the game. The FA president Major Francis Marindin turned them down and said: "Hadn't you better win it first?" They did not get their photo after the game either. So lacking in confidence were their West Bromwich opponents that when offered bets on the outcome of the game by the Preston players, they all refused, no matter how great the odds. 1887–88 FA Cup
The 1887–88 Football Association Challenge Cup was the 17th staging of the FA Cup, England's oldest Association football, football tournament. One hundred and forty-nine teams entered, twenty-one more than the previous season, although four of the one hundred and forty-nine never played a match. This was the last season in which there were no qualifying rounds, so all entering clubs were placed in the first round. After the formation of the Football League, a set of qualifying rounds was introduced, with League clubs given the right to request automatic exemption to the first round proper. The Invincibles (English Football)
In Association football, football, "The Invincibles" is a nickname used to refer to the Preston North End F.C., Preston North End team of the 1888–89 in English football, 1888–89 season, managed by William Sudell, and the Arsenal F.C., Arsenal 2003–04 Arsenal F.C. season, team of the 2003–04 FA Premier League, 2003–04 season managed by Arsène Wenger. Preston North End earned the nickname after completing an entire season undefeated in league and cup competition (27 games), while Arsenal were undefeated in the league (38 games) in a run that stretched to a record 49 games. Robert Mills-Roberts
Dr. Robert Herbert Mills-Roberts (5 August 1862 – 27 November 1935) was a Welsh footballer. A Welsh international, he was a member of the Preston North End side which became known as "The Invincibles". Tom Pearson (footballer)
Thomas Pearson (20 May 1866 – 4 July 1918) was an English footballer who played at inside-left. Career Pearson was born in West Bromwich. He turned professional with West Bromwich Albion in April 1886 and made his debut in February 1887 against Notts County in the sixth round of the FA Cup.Matthews (2005) pp. 173–174. Joe Wilson (footballer Born 1861)
Joseph James Wilson (8 January 1861 – 20 October 1952) was an English footballer who played at outside left. During his 15-year playing career he represented several teams from the West Midlands region, both as an amateur and a professional. He gained an FA Cup winners medal with West Bromwich Albion and was the scorer of the club's first ever goal in The Football League. Biography Wilson was born in Handsworth, Birmingham and attended St Mary's Council School and Handsworth Grammar School. George Timmins
George Timmins was an English footballer who played at left-half. George Timmins signed for West Bromwich Albion in 1880, turning professional in August 1885. From August 1885 through to April 1888, the last three seasons before the Football League commenced George Timmins was part of three FA Cup Final teams 1885 – 1888. Charlie Perry (footballer, Born 1866)
Charles Perry (3 January 1866 – 2 July 1927) was an English football centre-half who played for West Bromwich Albion and England. Biography Perry was born in West Bromwich. He joined West Bromwich Albion in March 1884 and turned professional in August 1885. He made his first team debut in the 1886 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers at The Oval, a match that finished 0–0. Perry collected a runners-up medal after Albion lost 2–0 in the replay. He was on the losing side once more in the 1887 final, in a 2–0 defeat to Aston Villa. He picked up his first winner's medal in 1888 as Albion beat Preston North End 2–1. Ezra Horton
Ezra Horton (20 August 1861 – 10 July 1939) was an English footballer who played at right-half; he had the nickname "Ironsides". He played for West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup final in 1886, 1887 and 1888. His younger brother Jack was also a footballer. Career Ezra Horton was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire on 20 August 1861. He attended the Christ Church & Beeches Road Schools and signed for George Salter Works in 1880, before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in the same year. Albert Aldridge
Albert James Aldridge (born 13 April 1864 – died 22 June 1891) was an English footballer who played as a full back. He was born in Walsall, won the FA Cup in 1888 and represented the England national football team twice. Career Aldridge started his career, as a Youth Player, at hometown club Walsall Swifts where he spent six seasons (five as a Youth Player and one as a Senior Player). He played in nine FA Cup ties and scored one goal, in a third round win over Mitchell St George's in January 1885. In March 1886 Aldridge moved to West Bromwich Albion where he earned his first cap for England in a British Home Championship match against Ireland in Belfast. He had great success in the FA Cup while at West Bromwich Albion, helping them to the final in 1887, and to win the trophy in 1888 by beating the much-fancied Preston North End in the final. Bob Roberts (footballer, Born 1859)
Robert John Roberts (9 April 1859 – 20 October 1929), better known as Bob Roberts, was an English football goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career at West Bromwich Albion, with whom he won an FA Cup winner's medal, and also played for Sunderland Albion and Aston Villa. He won three caps for England and is the first West Bromwich Albion player to have appeared at international level. He was nicknamed ''Long Bob'' and ''The Prince of Goalkeepers''.
