The Invincibles (English Football)
In Association football, football, "The Invincibles" is a nickname used to refer to the Preston North End F.C., Preston North End team of the 1888–89 in English football, 1888–89 season, managed by William Sudell, and the Arsenal F.C., Arsenal 2003–04 Arsenal F.C. season, team of the 2003–04 FA Premier League, 2003–04 season managed by Arsène Wenger. Preston North End earned the nickname after completing an entire season undefeated in league and cup competition (27 games), while Arsenal were undefeated in the league (38 games) in a run that stretched to a record 49 games. The actual nickname of the Preston team was the "Old Invincibles" but both versions have been in use. Deepdale
Deepdale is a football stadium in the Deepdale area of Preston, England, the home of Preston North End. Deepdale is "widely recognised as being the oldest 'continuously used' football stadium in the world, though this is contested". History The land on which the stadium stands was originally Deepdale Farm. It was leased on 21 January 1875 by the town's North End sports club and originally used for cricket and rugby. Fred Dewhurst
Frederick Dewhurst (16 December 1863 – 21 April 1895) was an English professional footballer, who played as an inside forward for Preston North End in the late 19th century. Dewhurst was the first North End player to play representative football for Lancashire when he took part in the game against London for the benefit of the Moorfield Colliery Relief Fund. He was a schoolmaster at the Catholic college in Preston and one of its first secretaries. As a player, he was renowned for testing his physical prowess against rival goalkeepers. Prior to the inauguration of the Football League, North End were anxious to prove their worth against the Corinthians. John Goodall
John Goodall (19 June 1863 – 20 May 1942) was a footballer who rose to fame as a centre forward for England and for Preston North End at the time of the development of the Football League, and also became Watford's first manager in 1903. He also played cricket in the County Championship for Derbyshire in 1895 and 1896, being one of 19 players to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Johnny Graham (footballer Born 1857)
John Graham (23 February 1857 – 23 February 1927) was a Scottish professional footballer of the 1880s. He was a player for Preston North End from 1884 until 27 March 1890 when he retired because of an injury. He was a member of 'the invincibles'. Career Toughened by his job as a quarryman, Graham initially played with Annbank in the Ayrshire Football Combination, and won one cap for the Scotland national football team in 1884; his appearance was in Scotland'a first–ever British Home Championship match, played on 26 January 1884 at the Ulster Cricket Ground against Ireland – Scotland won 5–0. David Russell (Scottish Footballer)
David Kennedy Russell (6 July 1863 – 18 January 1918) was a Scottish footballer. Born in Beith, Ayrshire, centre–half Russell first signed for Scottish club, Stewarton Cunninghamme in 1882. It isn't precisely recorded when he left and joined Preston North End, but it was before 1886. He joined Preston in their pre–League days and soon gained a reputation as a strong–tackling defender. He was certainly not a player to cross, as he showed in the match against Blackburn Olympic in 1886: Russell chased an opponent down the pitch and kicked him in the back. Robert Holmes, (23 June 1867 – 17 November 1955) was a professional footballer, who played for Preston North End. Career Holmes was the longest–serving survivor of the Preston North End team known as the 'Invincibles' when he died aged 88 in November 1955. His first club was Preston Olympic from 1883. Bob Howarth (20 June 1865 – 20 August 1938) was an English footballer. An England international, he was a member of the Preston North End side which became known as " The Invincibles". Career Bob Howarth was born in Preston. He joined Preston North End in 1883, and for eight years was a member of the North End side that earned the title of "The Invincibles".
