1883–84 Scottish Districts Season
The 1883–84 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District trial match. History Edinburgh District won the Inter-City for the first time in three years. The East v West match was played on 26 January 1884. The 1885–86 Scottish Districts season is a record of all the rugby union matches for Scotland's district teams. It includes the East of Scotland District versus West of Scotland District trial match. History The Hamilton Crescent ground was being re-turfed, so the Inter-City was played at Hampden Park for the first time that any rugby match was played there. The match was played in splendid weather. The ''Leeds Mercury'' reported that the match was the finest rugby match ever played in Glasgow; and that the attendance was the largest ever for a rugby match in Glasgow. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. East of Scotland District is a select provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players from the East of Scotland. Founded in 1876, the East of Scotland District team - and its corresponding West of Scotland District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. This was meant as an impetus to include players from beyond the original Glasgow District and Edinburgh District catchment areas. Hamilton Crescent
Hamilton Crescent is a cricket ground in the Partick area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club. Hamilton Crescent hosted the first international football match, between Scotland and England, played on 30 November 1872, which ended in a goalless draw, and was watched by a crowd of 4,000. A plaque on the wall of the clubhouse was placed to commemorate the match in 2002 by Mr John C McGinn, President of the Scottish Football Association. Further international matches were held here in 1874 and 1876, before being moved to the first Hampden Park.
