Sophus Black
Sophus Black (2 May 1882 – 22 December 1960) was a Danish telegraph manager and art collector. Born in Marstal, Denmark, Black was hired after preliminary diploma in 1900 Danish company Great Northern Telegraph Company and immediately thereafter posted in London. Subsequently, he was for twenty nine years from 1902–31 stationed in China, first in Shanghai, then from 1907 in Peking, where from 1919 he served as manager of among other things, the company's station in Hong Kong. Sophus Black was early preoccupied with Chinese culture. He learned the language, lived custom of the country, understood and respected Chinese mentality and began collecting distinguished Chinese art and antiques. In 1915 he married Minna Dich, a goldsmith. Together they collected Chinese art and antiquities. They returned to Denmark in 1931. Wilhelm Wanscher
Wilhelm Wanscer (21 April 1802 4 December 1882) was a Danish paper merchant and art collector, remembered above all for his associations with the philosopher Søren Kirkegård and some of the leading Danish Golden Age artists. He was the father of surgeon and industrialist Axel Wanscher, grandfather of art historian and great-grandfather of the designer Ole Wanscher. Early life and education Wanscher was born on 21 April 1802 in Copenhagen, the son of Christopher Wanscher (16591841 and Karen Smidt (18671841). His father was a paper merchant based in Gothersgade. Career Wanscher was licensed as a wholesale merchant (''grosserer'') in 1833 and started his own business the same year. It was based in the old Weisenhuset building at Købmagergade 44 (then Rosenborg Quarter, No. 6). He was the first external distributor of paper products from Strandmøllen north of Copenhagen. Hans Jørgen Hammer
Hans Jørgen Hammer (29 December 1815 – 28 January 1882) was a genre, landscape, and portrait painter and printmaker of the Golden Age of Danish painting. In addition, he served for eleven years as a military officer. Biography Hans Jørgen Hammer was born in Copenhagen to Johanne (née Bistrup) and Peder Pedersen Hammer, a shipmaster. A younger brother, William Hammer (1821–1889), also became a painter. As a boy Hammer displayed an aptitude for drawing, and he received his first training from the Norwegian-Danish master Jon Gulsen Berg (1783–1864), a court painter and wallpaper designer. Hammer was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts as an apprentice in 1828. His development was slow, and in 1835 he worked as an assistant to a decoration painter. Beginning in 1836, he trained for four years at the Plaster Cast School, and in 1840 he advanced to the Live Model School. Kai Nielsen (sculptor)
Kai Nielsen (26 November 1882 – 2 November 1924) was a Danish sculptor. Biography Early life and education Kai Nielsen was born on 26 November 1882 in Svendborg, the son of Christian Nielsen, a watchmaker, and his wife Ane Marie. At 15 he became an apprentice painter but was artistically inclined and began to paint landscapes and portraits. At the same time he studied at the technical school in Svendborg where he was taught moulding by Edvard Eriksen, later famous for creating The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. In 1901 he moved to Copenhagen and took drawing classes to prepare for the Art Academy. When he applied, they rejected his drawings but accepted him into the Sculpture School in view of a portrait bust he had made in Svendborg, and he became a student of Carl Aarsleff. At the Academy he began a lifelong friendship with Einar Utzon-Frank who also studied sculpture. Robert Storm Petersen
Robert Storm Petersen (19 September 1882 – 6 March 1949) was a Danish cartoonist, writer, animator, illustrator, painter and humorist. He is known almost exclusively by his pen name Storm P. Biography He was the son of a butcher and grew up in Copenhagen in a lower middle class environment. After interrupted studies at the Academy of Art, he worked as a free-lance painter, illustrator and cabaret entertainer. Already during World War I he was a well-known artist, and from about 1920 onward he was almost a national "institution" as a humorist, partly because of his versatile interests. His first comic strip was printed in 1906, in the Danish tabloid ''Ekstra Bladet''.
