Association Football
Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposition by moving the ball beyond the goal line into a rectangular framed goal defended by the opposing side. Traditionally, the game has been played over two 45 minute halves, for a total match time of 90 minutes. With an estimated 250 million players active in over 200 countries, it is considered the world's most popular sport. The game of association football is played in accordance with the Laws of the Game, a set of rules that has been in effect since 1863 with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) maintaining them since 1886. Le Havre AC
Le Havre Athletic Club (; commonly referred to as Le Havre) is a French association football club based in Le Havre, Normandy. The club was founded as an athletics and rugby club in 1872, making Le Havre AC the oldest professional French football club. Le Havre plays in Ligue 2, the second tier of French football, and plays its home matches at the Stade Océane. Charlie Athersmith
William Charles Athersmith Harper (10 May 1872 – 18 September 1910), known as Charlie Athersmith, was an English professional footballer who played as a winger. He played the majority of his club career at Aston Villa, making 307 appearances and scoring 85 goals, and also made 106 appearances for Small Heath. He was capped 12 times for England. Personal life Athersmith was born William Charles Athersmith Harper in Bloxwich, Staffordshire, to Isaac Harper and Mary Jane Wootton. Before becoming a professional footballer he was a clerk in Birmingham where he married Elizabeth Baggott in 1893. He is a first cousin of Rotherham United and Liverpool player Vic Wright. He died in Shifnal, Shropshire at the age of 38. Kelly Houlker
Albert Edward "Kelly" Houlker (27 April 1872 – 27 May 1962) was an English footballer who played at left-half for Blackburn Rovers and England. Playing career Houlker was born in Blackburn and started his long playing career at Blackburn Hornets, progressing through a variety of local sides in his home-town (including Oswaldtwistle Rovers, Cob Wall and Park Road) before joining Blackburn Rovers in August 1894. He remained at Blackburn Rovers for eight seasons. His time at Blackburn Rovers was during a long lean period for the club. During the 1896–97 season they stayed in the First Division only as the result of a decision to increase the number of teams. The final years of the 19th century brought little success for Blackburn Rovers and several narrow escapes from relegation. Houlker won his first England cap against Scotland two days before he left Rovers to join Southern League champions Portsmouth in May 1902. Jack Taylor (footballer, Born 1872)
John Daniel Taylor (27 January 1872 – 21 February 1949) was a Scottish professional footballer. Career Born in Dumbarton in 1872, Taylor started off his career at local club Dumbarton He signed for St Mirren in 1894. In 1896 Taylor was signed by English club Everton where he played in a number of positions. He was the only Everton player to feature in the FA Cup Finals of 1897, 1906 and 1907, finishing on the winning side in 1906. In the 1910 FA Cup semi-final against Barnsley Taylor was struck by the ball in the throat, damaging his larynx. This effectively ended his professional career and he was transferred to amateurs South Liverpool. Taylor is currently one of only 6 players to make 400 Football League appearances for Everton, making 456 in all competitions, 7th in the club's all-time appearance chart. 1871–72 FA Cup
The 1871–72 Football Association Challenge Cup was the first staging of the Football Association Challenge Cup, usually known in the modern era as the FA Cup, the oldest association football competition in the world. Fifteen of the association's fifty member clubs entered the first competition, although three withdrew without playing a game. In the final, held at Kennington Oval in London on 16 March 1872, Wanderers beat the Royal Engineers by a single goal, scored by Morton Betts, who was playing under the pseudonym A. H. Chequer. Background The Football Association, the governing body of the sport in England, had been formed in 1863, but for the first eight years of its existence, its member clubs played only friendly matches against each other, with no prizes at stake.
