Emil Biorn
Emil Christensen Biorn (June 7, 1864 – July 30, 1935) was a Norwegian-born American sculptor, painter, and composer. Background Emil Biorn was born in Christiania, Norway, the son of Christian Biørn from Lier and his wife Karoline Agnete, née Høyerdahl (or Heyerdahl), from Aurskog. He was trained at both the Royal Norwegian School of Drawing and at Lindeman's School of Music in Oslo. Biorn studied art in Paris and as well as at the Chicago Art Institute. Career In 1887, Biorn came to America, where he was employed as a commercial artist by the Barnes-Crosby Company, an engraving firm in Chicago. He married Sigrid Lowsum (1870–1939) in 1891. From 1906 to 1914, Biorn was principal conductor of the Norwegian Singers' Society of America. In 1914, he conducted that chorus during their trip to Norway to help celebrate the centennial of the Constitution of Norway. Gulbrand Hagen
Gulbrand Torsteinson Hagen (March 20, 1865 – February 25, 1919) was an American newspaper editor, writer and photographer in Minnesota and North Dakota at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th. Biography G. T. Hagen was born at Eggedal parish in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway and immigrated at age 17 to the United States in 1882. He continued his education at the Minnesota Lutheran Seminary and Institute in Willmar, Minnesota. In 1894, Hagen purchased a Norwegian language newspaper and moved the paper to Mayville, North Dakota and then to Crookston, Minnesota. The 1895 Minnesota State Census (not Federal) shows Gilbert Hagen living in Elbow Lake, Grant County, Minnesota, enumerated on June 1, 1895, having lived in the state for 6 years. Anders Svor
Anders Svor (December 14, 1864 – May 2, 1929) was a Norwegian sculptor. He was a realist influenced by Romanticism, and Auguste Rodin was also an important inspiration. His work was also part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Life Svor was a farmer's son, the child of Rasmus Kristofer Svor (1835–1914) and Ragnhild Svor née Seljeset (1834–1902). He was born and raised at the Svor farm in Hornindal. Already as a boy he showed unusual abilities in wood carving, which would be the start of his artist life. At the age of 17, he traveled to Kristiania (now Oslo), where he began as a woodcutter at the Hals Brothers piano factory. Carsten Borchgrevink
Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink (1 December 186421 April 1934) was an Anglo-Norwegian polar explorer and a pioneer of Antarctic travel. He inspired Sir Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and others associated with the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Borchgrevink began his exploring career in 1894 by joining a Norwegian whaling expedition, during which he became one of the first people to set foot on the Antarctic mainland. This achievement helped him to obtain backing for his ''Southern Cross'' expedition, which became the first to overwinter on the Antarctic mainland, and the first to visit the Great Ice Barrier since the expedition of Sir James Clark Ross nearly sixty years earlier. Ragna Wettergreen
Ragna Wettergreen (19 September 1864 – 27 June 1958) was a Norwegian actress. Biography Ragna Wettergreen was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. She was the daughter of Olaus Olsen and Inger Marie Rynning Kristianisen. She was the sister of the actress Marta Frogg and the aunt of the actor Odd Frogg. In 1889 she married the defense attorney Haakon Ingolf Wettergreen (1858–1902). She married a second time in 1903, to the artillery captain Roald Skancke (1876–1932). She made her stage début at Christiania Theatre in 1886. She performed at Christiania Theatre until it closed in 1899, and from then mainly at Nationaltheatret. For the 1905 to 1909 seasons, she was at the Fahlstrøm Theater. Ola Bertelsen
Ola Bertelsen (10 October 1864 – 26 November 1946) was a Norwegian jurist and politician for the Liberal Left Party. Born in Haugesund as the son of a bricklayer, he enrolled as a law student in 1883 and graduated as cand.jur. in 1888. He worked as an attorney in his hometown, before being appointed chief of police in 1911. In 1917 he was appointed estate administrator.
